Fell off the wagon -- BV cured!

Shortly after I started eating paleo about 6 months ago I was diagnosed with Bacterial Vaginosis. 2 rounds of antibiotics didn't clear it up and neither did any home remedies I researched at length. So here we are at the end of the holiday season and I have been gobbling up cookies and breads like it's the end of the world and suddenly my symptoms have started clearing up. What The Heck?

Thanks for this insight. I started eating paleo to feel better but have lost 20+lbs after having a baby 7 months ago. I'm pretty sure I had enough paleo carbs in my diet but I'll look more into what you suggested above regarding infections and ketogenic diets.

I've read this too, certain fungi and bacteria thrive off the ketones. But it also could be that our immune system is weakened in a low carb environment as well, and it could take a while for the body to become 'fat adapted' and the immune system to regain its former strength. Amber, are you low carbing specifically for weight loss/insulin sensitivity? If you aren't, you should try introducing more paleo carbs into your diet.

Agreed, probably a coincidence.

I'm not inclined to think it's a coincidence as the BV has been around for 5 or 6 months and all of a sudden clears up with more carb consumption

To add onto this, Paul Jaminet has also talked about how some infections, particularly fungi (such as candida) and protozoa (anything with a mitochondria, which bacteria do not have), usually thrive on ketogenic diets. He normally references gut infections when he talks about this but I suppose this is true for any bodily infection. There's an interview he does with Chris Kresser where he basically says, if someone does a ketogenic diet and their symptoms worsen but then they add more carbs and improve, there is likely an underlying fungal or protozoal infection. So in addition to the BV, maybe there's some other infection happening, as well (such as yeast/candida)? The other infection thrives when you cut out the carbs and so your immune system gets overwhelmed and the BV flourishes...just a thought. Good luck!

Maybe it's the added carbs, that gives you the relief. Glucose shortage can apparently lead to deficiencies in some compounds needed for normal mucus, Jaminet has some experience in the area of mucus problems, like dry eyes, and attributes it to glucose shortage which lead to shortage in the glycoproteins needed mucus.

BV can come and go. It is probably a coincidence that it went away while you were indulging in foods you don't usually eat. It's a tricky bacteria that can come and go. Did they give you a week worth of 500mg flagyl twice a day? That's the normal remedy. I have used a concoction of 2 heaping tblspn each of goldenseal powder, yellow dock root, both finely powdered, 6 dropper fils of tea tree oil, and warm coconut oil to make a consistency of dry pie crust. Shape into 12 suppositories. Freeze and use from the freezer. Olive oil helps TP use first for insertion. It's not fun but sometimes it works. You may want to ask a naturopath about this formula or an md who deals in natural medicine. If you use too much coconut oil, you won't be able to form the suppositories. Add ingedients as necessary to get the right consistency.

For those in the U.S., Costco has been selling Nutiva Organic Coconut oil, 78 ounces @ $21.99. That is a great price for that brand of Organic coconut oil.

They have been selling that for the last 3 months or so in my area.

It's possible that the pH of your body changed again when you started eating grains again, providing some temporary havoc to the bacteria in question. This doesn't mean that this will last though, or that what you did by starting eating wheat again is overall a good thing.
