Vibram's for women- care/ feel/ smell/ socks?

Answered on August 19, 2014

Hi all- I'm planning on purchasing a couple of vibrams in the very near future but wanted to shoot an few questions out first.

First- I absolutely want a pair of the performa's for women- I feel like I could totally get away with wearing them in my office. Does anyone make socks for them? they would have to be cut lower than ankle socks and I didn't see anything like that on the injinji socks site. Does anyone have them? General care instructions? I don't want funky feet but my hope would be to wear them nearly daily to and from work. Thoughts?

Second- I'm an avid crossfitter/ traveler/ hiker and I am trying to figure out what I want my other pair to be... any recommendations??

Thanks in advance Paloehacks world!

VFF Performas are way cuter than those Kigo Flits. The Trek LS, which aren't available yet for women, would also be very cute.

God, I read this title as "Vibrator's for women"! I'm thinking...smell? Very deceptive ;)

And then get yourself a pair of Kigo Flits, which look not just normal enough that no one will giggle at you in public, but are actually cute and sustainably made. All good. Because let's face it ladies, even Grok is turned off by a Grokette in ugly, ugly shoes.

As I mentioned in my question, I know about the injinji sock already-I'm looking for socks that can be worn with the performa style (lower than ankle cut toe socks). But thanks anyways.

UPDATE: I just found these online at Sock Dreams!

vibram's-for-women--care/-feel/-smell/-socks?

...

ORIGINAL ANSWER:

Oooo! Lucky you to get two pairs! I love my sprints and wish I could get some classics.

Re SECOND PAIR: For all your activities in one shoe, I think the TrekSport would be ideal for you. My husband has a pair of KSOs and he loves them, but Vibram has apparently addressed the KSO traction issue with the TrekSport. When you make your decision, would you let us know which pair you decided on and how you like them?

Re SOCKS: I see a micro sock on the Injinji website... Lower than the mini-crews. Are these not low enough? If not, I suggest making your own toe-less socks! You know, like fingerless gloves?

vibram's-for-women--care/-feel/-smell/-socks?

(Don't these look like performas?)

Anyway, just take a pair of socks that are the right cut and cut some holes! I suggest putting the sock on your foot and drawing a line where the tip of your toenail hits. Leave several millimeters of room in-between your lines. Like so...

vibram's-for-women--care/-feel/-smell/-socks?

Then, take some sissors and cut along those lines! Tada! Toeless socks!

vibram's-for-women--care/-feel/-smell/-socks?

You'll still get 90% of the benefit of wearing socks and cut down on smell and blisters!

UPDATE!!

I found some more options!

  1. HUE Peek-a-boo Liners - in black and nude.

  1. FEELMAX Toe Socks for Sneakers.

vibram's-for-women--care/-feel/-smell/-socks?

  1. These...?

Kidding! Hope this helps!

The new treksports look to be great all around hikers

They or the bikila for running will be my next pair.

I love my KSOs but lack in traction when wetgrass or rocks...sigh

I've already posted this, but if you get some cedar shavings (pet stores sell it for hamster bedding) and stuff a pair of nylon sockettes with the stuff and put them in your VFFs when not wearing them, it really keeps the odour down.

VFF Performas are way cuter than those Kigo Flits. The Trek LS, which aren't available yet for women, would also be very cute.

I don't wear socks, and my vibrams don't smell. I have a pair of KSOs, a pair of classics, and a pair of performas. I've washed the first two in the washing machine.

The Performas are the ONLY leather option - so they won't smell as much because leather breathes. All other models are made from synthetic materials so you may have to get injinji socks. They do make a crew model (I dont' think they make a "naked" model that you can't see in the Performas.

You might try a lingerie store for toe-stockings crew length. They're hard to find, but that might be the solution. I had a pair for my mules, but didn't buy the toe-variety.

In terms of general care, washing them once a week helps keep them from smelling. I also have more than one pair, so I don't have to wear the same pair everyday. I just throw them in the washing machine and air dry them. They dry rather quickly. Here is a good resource of cleaning/care http://birthdayshoes.com/the-definitive-guide-to-cleaning-vibram-five-fingers-a-k-a-how-to-get-the-smell-out-of-your-vibrams

In terms of socks, I have injinji socks, but I don't wear them that often. I prefer going naked feet ;) The socks do help with the odor however. http://www.injinji.com/tetratsok/performance.htm

In terms of which once to get, I recommend the Classics, Performas, Sprints or KSOs for indoor activities, the bikila running, and the KSO Trek/treksports for harder hiking. Basically, the harder the terrain, the thicker the sole. I tend to prefer the thinner-soled models because I really like to feel as close as possible to being barefoot.
