I had 7oz of Vanilla Haagen-Daz ice cream yesterday afternoon, then a down mood all morning today. Can anybody tell me why?

[26/m] I've been eating a very steady diet the past month. Mostly "Perfect Health Diet" style meals of grass-fed steak, fish, basamati rice, yams, raw milk, pasture butter, coconut oil, full-fat Fage, then tons of veggies and fruit. No deviation outside of occasional Indian and Vietnamese food (which is mostly within the diet). I've been feeling great and my mood and energy levels are very steady and good.

Anyways, yesterday it was a hot day and I'd been reading about Ray Peat eating a lot of ice cream, so I decided to get some. I got a small 14oz container of vanilla Haagen-Daz. Simple ingredients, and ate half of it around 6pm.

Now today I've been in a foggy-headed bad mood for the entire morning. I started to feel normal again around 4pm.

Assuming this is related, what bodily function is causing this? Could it be insulin related? I regularly drink a lot of milk so I don't think it was the lactose.

Not saying I haven't done it plenty of times... But far less frequently since being Paleo

I think anyone who eats ice cream (especially when they're not used to eating tons of sugar) will have an insulin sensitivity. That's where heart disease comes from! A lot of sugar is not good for our bodies!

I believe so. It was a hot day yesterday but I kept hydrated. I drink a few cups of water a day.

Did you add sprinkles? if you didn't that's your problem right there...also, there sounded like there was a severe lack of hot fudge?

...am I the only one that likes the add ons to ice cream more then the ice cream itself...I feel like I'm being judged...

Truth.

Who's to say you weren't going to be foggy/down today anyway? Just because you did X and Y happened, doesn't mean that X and Y are connected. Self-experimentation is find and dandy, but N=1 doesn't mean you try something only once to see the effect.

hard to say if it was the ice cream... Did you get enough water that day?

Since you've been eating dairy in other forms without a problem, this probably eliminates a dairy allergy.

This may indicate you've got an insulin sensitivity. If you ate the ice cream by itself without a larger meal, it could have hit you pretty hard.

Another possibility is a bacterial or fungal overgrowth in your system. They like the sugars, and it may have increased their production. Did you notice any digestive issues such as gas/bloating, etc.?

You could probably experiment with trying the ice cream in a smaller dose again several days from now, but eat it right after your meal. See if the fogginess returns or at least is at a lower level. Another experiment to try is to eat another type of paleo dessert (non-dairy) with a sweetener like maple syrup instead of sugar...try eating it alone without a large meal to see if the same feeling returns.

I'm really sensitive to sugars, so if I splurge, I make sure to eat it with a healthy, high-protein meal, and I do it only once a week and in small portions. I'd rather be clear-headed and feel happy than eat sugar!
