Gluten-Free Lip Balm - Am I Being Crazy?

Commented on January 30, 2014

So I've just realized that the lip balm I use, main ingredient is Soybean Oil.

Does this affect me?

I am paleo for health benefits and because it makes sense to me / makes me feel better. I am not intolerant to gluten.

Should I get a gluten-free lip balm or am I being crazy?

Any recommendations for a gluten-free lip balm that is not girly? IE no whacky flavors, just straight up proper balm that will protect my lips from this cold cold weather....

In this case, there seems to be no reason not to select a product you like (or are comfortable with), especially if you're using it regularly. It's much like selecting an aesthetic piece of art, or a pleasing possession, for yourself. Why should selecting an item used regularly on one's body be any different? :)

@Matt 44

I drink a gallon of water a day, eat very clean regular meals and use vegan natural soap.

It's just really really cold this time of year here and I walk around a lot outside.

I'm gonna give that one a try, just ordered. Thanks!

I do use coconut oil at home but need something on the go.

Thanks but I am looking for something easy to carry in my pocket around the city. But your philosophy makes sense to me and I agree, I don't like things I cannot pronounce in anything like this.

Yes. You are being crazy. ;-)

Seriously, use your worry cycles for something a bit grander, perhaps feeding the hungry or anything outside of yourself. The trade-off will have a lot more impact than what lip balm to use.

I wonder why you actually need lip balm... The only time I have chapped lips is when I'm quite dehydrated, use a soap or that's too harsh, or if I eat something that my system doesn't like.

If you are not gluten intolerant then there is no value in avoiding the minuscule parts per million of gluten that _might_ be in standard lip balm. Similarly, unless you're allergic about soybean oil, it's just not an issue. I find it very unlikely that any oil, even the nastiest trans-fat in the world, could affect you given the small quantities you're putting on your lips, multiplied by the small proportion that makes it into your body from there.

Use cacao butter. Want color? Add beet powder. I use just cacao butter. I have no idea if it makes a difference or not health wise but since switching to paleo I try to put as little crap on/in my body that I cant pronounce or would normally eat as I can. Maybe it is going a little far but it makes me feel better.
