craving grain products after not having had them in a while

I swear, I could go for almost anything containing grain right now, even though I haven't had grain in months. What gives, even though grains aren't particularly nutrient dense and contain anti-nutrients? What nutrient could possibly be in grain that isn't available in other paleo-approved sources? No, I'm not doing an inordinate amount of cardio, I don't have a particular psychological attachment to anything containing grain, and I've been getting plenty of fat and protein (liver and steamed spinach with grassfed alfredo sauce for dinner)

Well, I did have bananas and figs for carbs yesterday, because I was craving them OTL and yes, I recently started back at college (and it's that time of the month) so that would count as a change

It's not worth it! I gave in and ate 6 slices of bread, and now my lunch is trying to fight its way back up again!

Great answer Johnny,

that's very informative and along the lines of what I was going to suggest.

Whenever I get "the craving" I'll typically assess my diet and check my carb intake. To tell you the truth, I usually just grab a couple sweet potatoes when this happens and it seems to do the trick.

Grains are high-carb, so you may be craving carbs. What is your daily carb intake? You could always try some extra sweet potatoes or bananas.

Another user suggested that magnesium deficiency causes sugar cravings, and many Westerners are magnesium deficient. You could enter your diet into cron-o-meter and see if you have any nutrient deficiencies.

I always have carb cravings, even after months of healthy-low carb paleo. But your cravings sound like a response to a specific trigger, since you don't normally get them. Has anything changed in your life recently, like sleep pattern, stress, etc?
