Temporarily return to previous diet to see how this affects my chronic constipation?

Answered on August 19, 2014

To explain myself better i'll put the link to my previous post http://paleohacks.com/questions/100980/pretty-confused-about-my-g-i#axzz1njXmdyfu Now that you've read that, since paleo i've had constipation, now at its worst. A few things could have affected this, as you probaby read in the other post, i was underweight but am at a healthy weight now. Should I return to my previous diet minus the sugar ( but introduce all the grains i consumed previously) to see how this affects my constipation? Someone bluntly said to me after I explained to them the situation , "um, then Why don't you go back to your old diet then?"

What are your opinions?

Thank-you

@CoconutHeide- Re: laxative abuse-- In NO WAY did I mean to say you're abusing them, only that you should be careful. I used them more than daily for about a year when I was bulimic and was also dealing with constipation issues (probably due to my binge/purge cycles). The last thing I'm saying is that you are, only that long-term use can be difficult for the body to handle. I used them a LOT for a shorter period of time than some people need to use them for, but they can also get your body used to needing them in order to eliminate waste. *I'm not a doc, just giving my own experience.

@CoconutHeide- I totally understand that your GI doc told you to use them. I don't mean to stop using them if absolutely necessary, but I should have suggested that maybe you could get a second opinion? (I apologize for that first couple of sentences' lack of clarification.) I actually eat berries and things like grapes. Apples irritate my stomach in large quantities too, though I probably have a higher threshold than you at this point!

i'm just doing what the G.I specialist told me to do, this is a osmotic laxative, not senna. I hate using laxatives, I don't like taking any sord of medication, just a pet peeve of mine. But before I saw the doctor I took senna * i know bad mistake* on and off for a while, because the appointment was so far away and I didn't know what else to do What fruit do you recommend I eat? If i eat apples I start getting pains and bloated, so far I can eat bananas, berries ( blue in particular) and grapes

do you mind explaining what is concidered abusing laxatives? I took them on and off earlier ( senna) for a few months because I didn't know what else to do, I didn't enjoy taking them and I hated it. I didnt do it for any other purpose. I only have access to duck gelatin ( or pork i don't remember) so I guess i'll buy that!

I'm using osmotic laxatives, but what should I do apart from them? ( this was reccomended by the gi specialist and says theres no harm) 4. Anyways I can make sure I acheive this? My reason was because of my poor immune system, back acne and mood/energy issues

I think it'd be a better idea to re-introduce the sugar and not the grains. That being said, have you tried bone broth, or just beef gelatin? Worked wonders for me. I was constipated for 15 years (I'm now 20), and the past 4 months I've gone to the toilet once every day. Always in the morning.

Absolutely get rid of the laxatives. I abused them during a round of disordered eating years ago and it took my system a REALLY long time to normalize.

I've dealt with IBS-C and the biggest things for me were a) being vigilant about gluten avoidance, b) keeping my magnesium intake relatively high with supplements, c) avoiding dairy 90+% of the time, and d) increasing the amount of fruit (NOT bananas) I eat. I know fruit can be problematic for a lot of people, but when I avoid fruit altogether I end up with symptoms again.

Someone else mentioned gelatin. Do you drink bone broths? I've found having bone broth to be really helpful. I also use about 1 Tbsp gelatin a day, mixed with my tea or coffee.

Ultimately, and I know this sucks, you might need an elimination diet to figure out just what's causing you problems.

Edit to add: The laxative thing is extremely personal for me, and should not be confused with proper medical advice! It can be hard to re-regulate your digestive system after using them for long periods of time.

  1. Stop using laxatives
  2. What was the result of the Celiac test?
  3. If you have intestinal issues, it may help to do an elimination diet to figure out the trigger. The foods that I would begin with are dairy and gluten. Try reintroducing pretty neutral fruits and vegetables. Some people react badly to tomatoes, citrus, etc. Plenty of people are also allergic to strawberries. Try adding more and more of green leafy veggies to your diet. Carrots are good. STEAMED cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower are great. Don't go all out because your body needs time to get used to it if it's haywire at the moment. Maybe start with 2 servings and increase by 1/2 a serving a day. Stop shocking your body. When you're stable and the constipation has passed, add foods back slowly and keep careful track of your body's reaction. You don't necessarily need a bunch of tests if you do the elimination part right.
  4. Make sure that you're consuming enough nutrients for your growing body. Most of the people here are adults. Our bodies are not growing.
  5. What exactly is your goal with paleo? Is it to compete, gain muscle, etc.?? Make sure that your diet (diet = what and how you eat) fits your body, your lifestyle and your goals. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. While some people's bodies LOVE paleo, yours doesn't in the form in which you're doing it (with laxative abuse). So definitely stop the laxatives. If nothing else, rethink Paleo and tweak it to fit YOUR body.

Ditch the laxatives & get some Magnesium Citrate & take 200-600 mg right before bed. Start with the lowest dosage & slowly increase.

Most folk are deficient and grains are a ready (but not healthy) source of magnesium.

Keep a food diary and quesstion how you feel throughout the day. I have been largely paleo for a few years now and have hava occasional GI issues of constipation/ diarreah. I know that when i avoid nightshades, eggs, nuts and seeds as a planket approach that my bowel movements are near 'perfect'

Keeping your meals simple will hopefully make digestion better. It may be an idea to try eating meat seperatly to vegetables / fruit so that you can gauge how you feel and track what is working on your food diary.

If your gut flora is compromised through years of SAD, it is going to take time to adjust. Keep reading, learning and listening to your body.

You can add some psyllium husks to your diet. Simple fiber for more bulk. One to three doses a day. The capsules are easier to take than metamucil.

Perhaps more green vegetables? More fruit each day?

This happens to me sometimes and I'll add more nuts and seeds...next day...problem solved.

I also have a "cheat meal" once a week where I eat whatever I want. This also keeps constipation at bay.

Remember if you are doing paleo like a low carb diet that each gram of carbohydrate holds 4 grams of water...with less water in your bowel (from less carbs) you will be constipated. Drink more water, have cheat days, increase fiber... these are the most effective ways to handle this that I've found.
