red meat and constipation

I grew up eating only chicken, fish, and turkey. Now I am eating a helpful serving of steak for the first time in my life, and while delicious, it leaves me constipated.

Is there a break-in period for red meat consumption causing constipation and how long does it last?

Pennieloaf, have you reduced your carb intake? Reducing the amount of fiber can require some time for the bowels to adjust to not being overstretched, and to resume their normal muscle tone. When I went VLC (very low carb), it took a few months for mine to adjust. Drinking more water, eating enough animal fats, getting enough rest and exercise helps a great deal. If that isn't enough, taking extra magnesium during the adjustment phase might just take care of it.

Overcooking red meat can make it difficult to digest. Anything over medium is going to make it hard to break down.

I really believe it's all about your carb intake. My total carbs are fairly low--I usually say "moderate"--but I eat at least one piece of fruit daily and a generous leafy salad.

I've had no problems at all with constipation despite my habit of eating generous portions of beef. Also, if you tolerate dairy at all yogurt and cream are "looseners" for me as well.
