Constipation after elimination of potatoes from diet. What can I do?

Answered on August 19, 2014

My diet consists of Onions, Carrots, Swede, Apple sauce, eggs, gelatin, various meats, fish and fats. I'm 20 years old and have been eating like this for ~1 year in an attempt to gain weight, alleviate depression, stop insomnia and rid myself of acne and athletes foot. Which has been successful for the most part.

After eliminating potatoes (and milk) from my diet to start GAPS I developed constipation.

Is there anything other than potatoes I could add to my diet to help with this? Psyllium Husk perhaps? Or would the best option for me be to add the potatoes back in?

I'm prone to athletes foot which returns when I eat grains (disappointing as they improve my digestion massively) and potatoes don't have much effect on it but they don't help either.

Thanks! :-)

We are not attaching the label 'Paleo' to it, although we both run a Paleo group. General nutrition obviously plays an important role in causing and treating Autism. My wife runs a school, and the centre is a natural extension from that. We are in Indonesia and there are lots of people here needing help and very little in the way of support. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-74554/How-fishy-diet-help-autistic-children.html

yeah, you have to give it time. And the detox your body will go through is not going to work if you add those illegal foods back in (have you found the list? just google illegal foods GAPS) Hang tough, add more veggies, there are no quantity restrictions on GAPS

Thanks Kelly! I will take your water suggestion. I had a change of mind in the shop and decided to go another week without potatoes as I felt I was giving up on things too soon - especially with the broth addition.

I was scoffing loads of Biokult and Dr. Ohhira's a couple of weeks ago (before my diet change) but stopped as I didn't notice any difference. I still have a stash of them though and got some Kefir fermenting.

good luck Mark! Maybe with the broths (and the added fat in the broth) this might help as well. Also try adding the water first thing in the morning and wait 20 minutes before eating anything, this might help too.

I'm going to start natural broths toady actually, Iv'e been on/off boxed gelatin several times with no noticeable difference, so I think it's ok. I have no official start date, just making the switch as things arrive and I read more etc. :-)

Fiber only makes it worse if the fiber is from grain type sources. Fiber from roots(tubers) is usually beneficial.

Eat potatoes, nothing wrong with them especially if you have no apparent issues when you eat them.

I'm a GAPS person as well, GAPS tells you to add more veggies/carbs for constipation (ie: broccoli, carrots, squash adn cauliflower)

Have you started with broths with natural gelatin in them? maybe the gelatin is too much if its a boxed version?

My daughter in law just started GAPS and she has the same issue as you, and upping her carbs/veggies helped. Stage one is carrots, squash/pumkin, broccoli flowerets and cauliflower flowerets.

When are you officially starting?

I'm not too familiar with the GAPS diet but a quick search seems to show that bananas are okay. Have you tried adding in some of those. I have heard that they can soften things up for you a bit.

How long have you been on the new diet? I would imagine it takes our bodies some time to adjust to a different level of fiber (whether increasing or decreasing). There are some good comments here from people who felt better after reducing fiber:

Take some magnesium. No matter how constipated you were before, magnesium will keep everything smooth and regular.

Spinach! Has magnesium and helps keep me regular. Either cook it up in some coconut oil, or a baby spinach salad is nice in warmer months - I'm doing salad + protein for lunch these days. And doesn't seem like you have any greens in your diet.

I know I will get down-voted for this but personally I don't trust any diet that is trademarked, or that has a web-site which is pretty much solely to supplement a book.

For info on mental / health problems to start with the Dr Terry Wahls TED video on YouTube. Cut the Apple Sauce and supplement plenty of leafy vegetables. The rest of your diet seems to be on the right lines.

My wife is opening a special needs centre and GAPS provides nothing that a Paleo diet can't as long as you pay special attention to ensuring sufficient Omega 3 (perhaps supplemented), and sunshine for Vitamin D (again consider a quality supplement). These are especially important for people with Depression or a host of other mental problems inc Autism.

Some extra can be found here.

Right now I'm in agreeance with cliff, as my carb/veg intake is pretty high already with a good pulse/temp after meals. I'm going to add potatoes back in and monitor closely how I get on.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm still open to change if any one else has anything to add.

Off to the shop...

Fiber makes it worse. By eliminating potatoes you likely reduced your carb intake a lot. To solve this you can eat more gelatin, but the most important part is increasing your carbohydrate intake by a lot. Unless you find an other starch that you tolerate, you'll have to eat a lot of fruit to make up for it.

Constipation is likely caused by a slowed thyroid due to the lack of carbs.
