anyone else think our cultural coffee consumption masks mass constipation?

I tend to believe that way more people suffer constipation than they realize, but their morning cup(s) of coffee (or possibly cigarette/soft drink/black tea/yerba mate habits) hide the symptoms of constipation by virtue of their stimulant drug properties.

I think if we didn't culturally consume so many stimulants then a lot more people would report constipation than already do.

I think this might also be the case in our Paleo community. do any of you rely on a cuppa joe to stay regular? I know magnesium is a common supplement for constipation. it boggles me a bit to see it recommended in this community as, essentially, a laxative.

It makes me think that even in our community we are trying to use bandaids to aid the symptoms of omnipresent dysbiosis issues. maybe our guts are beyond repair?

my gut is certainly suffering since I took caffeine out of my diet, and I didn't even realize how reliant I had become on my morning coffee until I went without.

I definitely use it to avoid constipation, even though I'm afraid of the effects it has on my hormones, weight, etc. I've tried cutting it out a couple times, but always end up justifying my reasons to bring it back. Have you experienced any positive effects since quitting?

I tend to wake up and go, even before my cup of coffee. So this doesn't seem to be an issue for me.

I agree and have often wondered the same thing. And because if I cut out coffee for a few days, then include it (8 oz), I have the imminent need to "go". It also makes me wonder if it is a gut irritant for me, or if it is simply the diuretic properties of the coffee.

A cup of very strong coffee or espresso can definitely 'loosen my stool'. But the one or two cups of bleak coffee I have per day (or none som days) is no problem at all. I have heard many other people say the same about their toilet habits wrt. coffee.

I haven't had coffee for 15 years, and I have issues with constipation. And yes, I often wonder, as I pass the Starbucks lineup in the morning, how many of them would be in the same boat as me were it not for their daily cuppa.
