zinc for a cold

I keep reading you should take zinc at the beginning of a cold to shorten the length of it. Well, I feel a cold coming on, starting in my throat as usual, and the only zinc I have is Jarrow's Zinc Balance which has 15mg zinc, 1mg copper. The recommended dosage is 1 capsule every day or every other.

Could I take two today without any negative side effects? Would that even be enough to help? Or should I go to the store and try to find a different zinc?

Any other tips for nipping this thing in the bud?

No, not at all. I actually take 50mg of Zn on a daily basis. Lots of ZMA supplements have 100mg of Zn. I don't take 200mg for more than a few days though.

I regularly take Vitamin C and D and use coconut oil, but somehow some little buggers got past my defenses! I think all the preventive measures I took today, including the zinc, really helped!

I did some searching and a lot of sites say not to exceed 50mg of zinc in one day. Do you ever feel any negative side-effects from taking that much?

To add to this Vitamin D. That stuff helps keeps me cold/flu-free during the winter season.

I've used zinc lozenges (not capsules) in the past when coming down with a cold. It's recommended to start using them within the first 24 to 48 hours of onset of cold symptoms and they have to dissolve in the mouth to be effective. They made my colds less severe and not last as long as compared to not taking them at all. They don't really taste that good, though, and they may have some other nasty ingredients in them. However, I prefer that than the sinus infection I usually get after the cold.

zinc is good but garlic really killed my cold! i ate 7 cloves one night and the next day, my sinuses and head were 100x clearer. i continued that every day until it was gone. i had been taking zinc for about a week before that and i didn't have any relief in symptoms.

For a sore throat: Gargle salt water, vinegar, or lemon water.

Other tips/tricks:

1. Garlic - Mince a few cloves of garlic and drink it in water (it sounds gross, but it works). Garlic has a lot of antibiotic and antiviral properties and ingesting it can lessen the severity and the time of sickness.

2. Coconut Oil - Studies have shown that the lauric acid present in coconut oil can dissolve the lipid coating around some viruses, which makes them more susceptible to attack from your immune system.

3. Vitamin C - We hear this one a lot, but it really works! I take it in tablet form, from a bottle I bought at whole foods.

Don't know about the zinc formula you have but I keep Zand's zinc cold lozenges on hand and they def shorten the time I'd have the cold. I also add Umpka cold formula. It's very sweet but it helps
