I have a cold. How can I get over it?

Answered on September 12, 2014

I got some sort of virus three days ago. I feel good when I wake up, but I feel like crap again every night before going to bed. (Although I do feel less crappy than the night before).

What can I do combat this cold as quickly as possible? How long will it take me to get over it? And how long should I wait before resuming my workout routine?

Symptoms: Sore Throat Runny Nose Fever Fatigue Headache

Any help's appreciated.

Totally agree...4 to 5 cups of homemade chicken broth a day, minimum. I'm also a big fan of Traditional Medicinals echinacea tea, although everyone keeps telling me it's been "proven" not to help colds.

Are you Primal or Paleo?

I never get sick when I eat a very clean Paleo. In fact, I don't even remember when was the last time I had a flu- I eat so clean. Wait, I think I remember - I got sick after I had an ice-cream during the summer.

Okay, so:

  1. Nothing boxed, packaged, frozen or dried - even if it is Paleo.

  2. You can only buy fresh vegetables/low sugar fruit, meat, fish, eggs at the store.

  3. No vegetable oils except for a little EVOO from a reliable source and only if you want it.

  4. Eat raw or steam your veggies. Have some green leafy ones with every meal (arugula, spinach, etc).

When I eat like that, I NEVER get sick. Maybe because this kind of diet boosts my immune system? I do not take any supplements. Hope this helps.

All of the above, except maybe that last bit about Vitamin D. That's a whole lot of sunshine. I feel your pain, I'm sick right now, too! LOTS of sleep, and also I find Epsom salt baths to be AMAZING. Also some ginger baths, to get blood pumping, helps tons. I always bundle up and sweat it out... Calcium will bring your fever down if you're really bothered by it, and if your throat is infected (versus just sore due to post nasal drip or mouth breathing) a garlic clove lightly crushed and held in the back of your cheek for an hour will SUCK and TASTE TERRIBLE but clear the infection right up.

40,000 IUs of D3 per day for 2-3 days. Works every time for me.

Worth getting your blood level tested & sun/supplement to 50-60 ng/ml.

Cold-Eeze zinc lozenges knock a cold out quick. +1 for warm neti, great symptom relief. Also, a thin slice of jalape??o or other chili will give sinus relief for around a half hour.

35% food grade hydrogen perxoide. My dad was coming dowm with phnemonia. Hasn't been sick in like 10 years but we ripped up the carpet and there was some serious mold. Anyways. I put one ounce of that stuff in 11 parts distilled water (from the kettle). He chugged down about 1/3 of it and he started throwing up, it wasn't like vomit though, it was a thick virus. He's back to the pink in like 12 hours. Amazing!

This is probably too late for you now but I find that zinc lozenges taken within the first 24 hours of onset of cold symptoms really cut duration and severity. In any case you should be feeling better within 7 to 10 days. I haven't had a cold in probably about 15 months, even being around sick kids. I'm sure it's due to improved nutritional status and I also take 10000IU of D3 daily which also helps.

If you only have a head cold and are feeling up to it (and not grotty snotty), you can probably work out. Please wipe off your equipment after using, though, and thanks! If you have a chest cold, then I would probably take it a little easier. Drink plenty of fluids and feel better soon!

I squeeze the juice of a lemon and grind the rind to create a super-potent concoction. I mix it with a lot of water, warm it, and drink it throughout the day. Nothing eases my symptoms better!

Vitamin C + zinc <<(although it may be too late for those to do much good), B-complex, rest, and take some OTC cold meds to alleviate your symptoms.

I had a head cold last month and it took about three days to get over it. Eating right and boosting vitamin intakes gives your body the ammunition it needs to fight off the virus.

there are tons and tons of tricks to helping you ward off a cold, or prevent them, the best way for future reference is to have an arsenal ready at the first signs of symptomps and deal with them accordingly. Some of these i recommend are :

-Raw Sidr Honey -Raw Manuka honey -Vitamin C -Vitamin A -fresh ground turmeric in warm milk

-Black seed oil -Wild Oregano Oil - higher carvacrol the better. -Echinicea Tincture - 1:1 ratio of Root and leaf. -Elderberry Tincture or Syrup (be aware of brand you are choosing)

-Yin Chiao (chinese remedy to stop a cold) and Zong Gan Ling (when the cold takes place). You can supplement either with gan mao ling as well.

-Myrrh sublingually

-Homeopathically - a bit more tricky as its very symptom specific but Ferrum Phosporicum 6x taken every 1-2 hours will help with inflammation and fever, alternate it hourly with Nat Sulph 6x which is the principal remedy in tissue salts for influenza. Also you can consider taking a dose of Anas Barbariae 200c , once. The big brands sell it as "cocculine" but i prefer using ones locally made by a trusted homepathic company since 1868! A good remedy to have on hand is Aconite 30C, which you should take at the first sign of flu, with sudden onset and no clear symptomps.

If your chest bothers you , you can pour boiling water in a bowl add a few drops of tea tree oil (higher the terpinen-4-ol the better) and peppermint essential oils and inhale briefly to give cooling relief.

Neti pots are also fabulous and you can use a light solution of manuka or sidr honey to flush your sinus as a POTENT natural anti biotic..

dont forget the ultimate cure, BED REST!

These tricks should help you stay armed for your next flu attack!

I don't know if it is too late, but Wellness Formula by Source Naturals is an excellent thing to take as soon as you start feeling sick. I am not sure if it is the zinc in the formula or something else, but it will stop my cold within a day if I take it. I always have some on hand.
