Getting a Cold?

Answered on August 19, 2014

Hi all,

What's your recommendation for nipping a cold before it really gets started? I can feel the back of my throat getting dry, so I know my sinuses are going to be a little out of whack.

I've already taken some extra Vitamin C, and I've read good things about garlic, extra Vitamin D, and a red pepper treatment (I'm not sure about this one - any tips?). Is there anything else you'd suggest?

Thanks!

You will get the runs if you increase Vit C too much. There is a delicate balance between too much and just right.

Started with 10,000IU gel caps D3 daily for 6 months and since then, I am taking 5,000IU a day. Now brand, since the carrier is olive oil and not soybean oil.

Ooh, I like the coconut oil idea - I'll give that a try, too.

Thanks everyone! I've increased my neti pot usage, really increased my Vitamin D and C intake, been drinking a ton of water, slept pretty well last night, and I think it's all helping! I won't say all my symptoms are gone, but I think it's going in the right direction.

is there really anything you do that would so acutely affect this situation once you can already feel the symptoms? Ive grown up with all the "drink green tea, drink chamomile, sleep more, vitamin C" blah blah but i mean once you are actually enduring the symptoms i would think that our system is complex enough that there is nothing you could do to immediately address the issue. Beyond NSAIDs to take down fever, etc.

In addition to extra D, C and zinc, I usually make a bone broth soup and make a point of eating something containing coconut oil (a couple of T) before going to bed early and sleeping it off. Between the healing properties of the broth and the antibacterial properties of the coconut oil, this regimen works for me every time. I've started to get sick a couple of times in the past two years, but I always wake up the next morning feeling 200% better.

Since taking Vit D3 and getting my serum Vit D3 level up to 79ng/ml I have had absolutely no cold symptoms and that has been for two years now. I do read about people taking 50,000IU Vit D for three days and nipping the cold symptoms in the bud.

Not dietary, but this is my go-to solution. Works great! http://www.amazon.com/NeilMed-Sinus-Rinse-Regular-Kit/dp/B000A0S5KC

Get plenty of rest and avoid stress, especially if you feel at all tired. This is not a time to push. And avoid sugar and starch even more. All of the above will weaken your immune system. I can usually nip out these kinds of little germ attacks just by drinking some water and getting a good extra long night's rest. With a bit of luck, you'll feel better in the morning!

Extra Vitamin D is a good idea. When I feel symptoms of a cold, I drink hot chicken stock with red pepper and ginger. If I drank the stock early enough, it lessens the symptoms noticeable.
