To the people who have quit coffee permanently : what substitutes/ what benefits ?

Holla!

I am an almost 3 month-paleo enthusiast. Feel and look much better since going primal.

This morning I decided to go on another level of wellbeing and to cut coffee for at least 30 days (hoping that I could do a permanent change after that).

What do I want to achieve ? Better concentration, better sleep, calmer mind, drug-free mind, willpower strenghtening, no need to depend on a high quality espresso, that costs MUCH more and I MUST give more money when I learn in the campus bibliothek and not at home. I just want to be free of this drug.

What's my problem? I am scared that I will experience a lot of pain (drink 3 double espresso daily, the last is 17 h ) :) So... is there any substitute that helps during this period of abstinence ? What helped you? Or I must just go through it? I've tried to lower the dose for weeks and do it step by step, but I am just an extreme person : cold turkey or nothing :D

What benefits did you experience after quitting? When did they occur? Are you happier after that change ? :)

So... thanks for answering !! :)

All the best, Penelope

Actually, this is a better link about coffee and toxins: http://www.bulletproofexec.com/why-bad-coffee-makes-you-weak/

I prefer the vanilla nut one. Delish!!! Better than the real thing. They also have gluten free (but not low FODMAP) on their website.

I didn't notice any benefits after cutting out caffeine for 2 years. Why not switch to green tea?

I cut out caffeine when I got pregnant. It was easy to do, as I didn't want my baby to get it. I have to say, I didn't really notice a huge difference after I quit. The paleo diet will give you lots of energy. I didn't notice anything until one day I had a cup of coffee -- WOWEE. THEN I noticed a HUGE difference. Caffeine sure is a powerful drug. I'm doing fine without it. You will too. Get lots of sleep and eat a good diet.

Generally coffee isn't the problem, the quality of the coffee is. I drink bulletproof coffee every day for breakfast and have never felt better!

All the best!

I still drink 2 strong cups early in the morning, but like you, I'd like to be free of it.

Cutting back gradually has worked previously to prevent the (terrible) withdrawal headaches, but I mostly stay addicted now for a few reasons, mainly because coffee seems to help prevent sinuses headaches.

Magnesium citrate would probably help prevent withdrawal headaches...

Teechino saved my life!

You make it just like coffee, but it's a caffeine free herbal tea. There are other brands of it too! http://teeccino.com

And they make it super easy to switch over (1/4 cup teechino to 3/4 cup coffee on day one. Very nice!)

Also, buy the "java" or one of the dark roasts if you want it to be a little more like coffee!

I too would like to give up all coffee for awhile. I mostly just drink one good strong Bodum coffee in the morning. Maybe a weak instant later in the day. I drink a lot of herbal tea. I can't imagine not having that richness of aroma and flavour when I wake up though. That's why switching to something like green tea would be so disappointing. coffee make me excited to jump out of bed.

Yet, I feel it prevents me from eating in the morning, as it kills my appetite, makes me crave something sweet/carby with it (I usually don't anyway) I always put cream or coconut milk in it... and no longer feel that 'rush' of caffeine sensitivity as described in a previous answer.

I would like to at least have a break from it for awhile, even though there may be no benefit. There may be.

Not gonna be easy though!

Coffee substitutes-- what is a paleo-friendly, grain-free roasted instant powder?

I am am avid coffee drinker, and just got my juicer 1 week ago. I have been juicing 3 times daily, and have found myself not craving caffeine as bad as before! I don't wake up with a headache, and run to the pot to make it in the mornings. I have cut back, not really even meaning to. I also realized I have stopped taking over the counter pain medicine. I hope to cut caffeine from my life in the future. I wish you the best! Let us know how it goes!
