Old cloudy cod liver oil

I inherited a bottle of cod liver oil from my dad (he used to swear by it for knee pain), and now I rediscover it in the back of my fridge, all cloudy like mother of vinegar. Should I toss it, or is it still good?

No, I never did and as I recall I used to hide it away in my cheek and spit it out later! The double yuck is because I am certain that old stuff is rancid by now.

If you need extra vitamins A & D, then take the cod liver oil. If you just want omega 3's, then fish oil would be ok.

If you say double yuck, I presume you never liked the taste of the fresh stuff either. That wasn't really a problem for me, I just thought the capsules were more convenient. See below.

Thanks, I'll toss it. But as I mentioned in another thread, the real reason I haven't been taking it is that I heard it's no better than other fish oil supplements. So the question now is, should I get back on a daily dose of cod liver oil, or should I just take the ordinary fish oil capsules?

Hi Huey,

There was a similar debate here regarding Carlson's fish oil.

The important issue is whether the oil is actually oxidized (bad), or whether some less volatile intrinsic components of the oil are precipitating due to refrigeration (not so bad).

The questions for you are:
1. How old is the oil?
2. Has the oil been opened yet?

If the oil is old (beyond its expiration date), it should be discarded.

Regarding the second question, a sealed bottle of oil will last a lot longer than an opened bottle. Carlson's recommends using opened bottles of fish oils within 3 months. So if the bottle has been open more than 3 months, you should discard it.
