MCFA alternative? Coconut oil makes me sick!

I am a type 2 diabetic, and I found that switching to Paleo over a year ago brought my blood sugar down from the 360~480 range to the low 200's. FANTASTIC, RIGHT?

I've taken insulin before, but it caused a rapid, disgusting weight gain of 2.5 pounds a week, and showed no signs of stopping even after 45 pounds of pure fat gain, so I gave it the boot.

Coconut milk and coconut oil have actually done wonders for me, although not without some side effects. Coconut milk before bed results in a 20-40 point lower fasting blood glucose reading than usual. I did a coconut milk fast (with some added curry and basil for flavor) and found that over the course of a single day, my blood sugar went from 250 fasting to 160 before bed. It was the first time in my adult life I've had a sugar reading that low without insulin. I'm confident that a two- or three-day coconut milk fast would have brought it down to 100 or less.

Here's the problem - coconut oil and milk make me feel sick! Straight from the spoon, they're both unbearable to me. They're tasty, but the nausea is unavoidable. It's not because I need time to let my body adjust - I've been taking them several times a week for 8 months, and the nausea hasn't lessened. If I take coconut oil within 3 hours before a workout class, I have to quit early for fear of puking. Even a smoothie made of coconut milk and fruit makes me want to bleeehhh afterwards, despite total tastiness.

I don't want to give them up, since the medium-chain-fatty-acids seem to be doing amazing things that no diabetes medicine ever did for me. But, I also don't want to spend the rest of my life nauseous, just to get a few extra years. Are there other foods that have MCFA's that might not make me so sick?

You could buy MCT oil, it's made from coconut and palm, but it's just the medium chain triglycerides.




You really shouldn't consume coconut milk or oil before bed, the MCTs will give you a burst of energy and keep you from sleeping. The same is true of fish oil for some.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I picked up a bottle of MCT oil from Sprouts and have been taking it for a couple of days. It goes down easier than the coconut oil, for sure :D

Try out for palm kernel oil. It is one of the richest source of of MCFA which can be included in soup mix.

Did you try starting a very low dose and increasing the dose very slowly ? That may be worth trying.

Clarified butter has SCFA's & MCFA's, I think SCFA's should be even easier to digest than MCFA's, I know when I'm deep into fat adaptation and have some straight butterfat it gives me really great energy, even moreso than coconut oil. Some people think that coconut fat is so great as it mimmicks the fat in mothers milk, clarified butter is fat from mothers milk!
