Coconut Oil Cravings?

Answered on September 27, 2012

I never cook with coconut oil because I don't like the taste with savory foods. But, at night, I crave coconut oil. I always have some "coconut bark" (frozen coconut oil with 85% dark chocolate melted in and raw almonds) and sometimes that doesn't even stop the cravings. Sometimes after the coconut bark, I have to eat my Paleo Fuel protein drink with a tablespoon of coconut oil added in. I'm consuming about 2-4 tablespoons of cononut oil per night. Sometimes I even wake up in the middle of the night and eat coconut oil.

Should I be concerned? Why am I craving it?

LOL...I thought I was the only one who knew about Coconut Oil + DARK Chocolate. I add coconut shavings tho... It works for me :)

perhaps it is as the above answer says a craving for a "fast energy source" and now that you are past sugar cravings it's asking for MCTs.... plausible I guess

When I was on the SAD I used to wake up every night and eat sugary foods. Now, I rarely wake up in the middle of the night to eat. But, when I do I go straight for the coconut bark.

I haven't tried refined coconut oil, but have been considering it. Lately, I've been using homemade ghee. Do you think refined coconut oil would be better for me than the ghee?

Hi Matt, No, it is pretty much a coconut oil craving. And, it hasn't been as strong in the past week. -Hilary

If you're eating it with chocolate and almonds, no wonder you're craving it :p

Maybe it's a symptom of your body getting used to fat metabolism, and you are craving the MCT's in coconut oil to help move it along. Or maybe you just love it so much that it's worth waking up for.

Well, now that I've been Paleo for a little longer (and have completely dropped dairy...not sure if that has anything to do with it) I don't crave the coconut oil anymore. About three days a week, I have a piece the coconut bark as a treat.

I've adopted a Whole30 method of trying to get the right amount protein (palm or two full), veggies (as much as I want), and fat (1T or so) at each meal. For fats I'm doing coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, or clarified butter.

But, in the beginning those cravings were something fierce!

Regarding not liking the flavor with savory foods, have you tried a refined coconut oil? Spectrum makes one that's pretty flavor neutral. But it's gross just straight.

As for the cravings, are you enjoying the oil like a dessert/treat, or does it just seem like a compulsion/habit? Do you feel like it's too much?

Your "coconut bark" is making me crave it as well! Back to the question, does any other form of fat satisfy the craving (butter, etc.)?
