Coconut Milk Types!

I just started my paleo experience 5 days ago! I went to the store, and couldn't find a coconut milk that didn't have preservatives. Mind you, I was getting a little testy and just wanted to get out of the store...I ended up buying Oh So Delicious (or something along those lines). I realized after I put it away at home that it has a lot of added ingredients. Silly me...should have read the damn label!

My question is how much will drinking this (I use it in smoothies mostly) throw me off my paleo experience? Will the sugar stop me from weaning off of all the other sugars I am giving up, or will it be okay?

Chuck it or chug it?

I tried to drink that So Delicious coconut milk once and nearly gagged. It's gross. Like everyone below says, you want the stuff in the can from the Asian/Thai section of the market.

Carrageenan might not be desirable to some people. http://thehealthqueen.blogspot.com/2009/05/warning-about-carrageenan-side-effects.html http://blog.healthkismet.com/carrageenan-cancer-health-inflammation

I find all of the refrigerated coconut milk will have preservatives and other stuff added. I go for the canned stuff, which usually shows up in the "ethnic" or "asian" sections of the grocery stores I shop at. You can also buy it online.

If you have a Trader Joes or Whole Foods that's where I get mine. At Whole Foods be sure to get "Native Forest" brand as their can is the only one that does not contain any deadly BPA liners in the cans. Trader Joe's brand also claim their brand of coconut milk does not contain BPA in the cans. Got the info from; http://bpafreecannedfood.wordpress.com/bpa-free-canned-food-brands/ >>>> Hope this helps & enjoy the Paleo lifestyle!

Hi, I dont know if you can get Kara coconut milk in the US, but its pretty good and free from preservatives. Heres the link for the different types which have all the ingridants. http://www.karadairyfree.com/product_specifications/ my personal fave is the chilled on because they added the Carrageenan which is extracted from seaweed. But it tatses all yummy and creamy. I keep the long life one in the cupboard in case i run out, but its not as thick and chalky when you get to the end, but still yummy non the less. Maybe you can ask your food store to look into geting it in? I havent tried the chocolate as i hate chocolate flavoured things, but it sells well where i work.

If you have a blender, it's actually pretty easy (and also cheaper) to make it yourself... here's a link!

Nicole,

Do you have any Asians markets near you?

I found some coconut milk in the frozen food case at an Asian market near me. It came in a plastic bag and the only ingredient was coconut milk and no other additives. It was 2.19 for this item. See photo of this item in link below.

i'm not exactly sure of the ingredients in it, but i stopped consuming that brand a while ago because of all the junk in it. i couldn't believe the additives it has. since you are just starting, maybe just finish the bottle and just don't buy it again. i know i hate wasting foods. you could also just give it to someone else.
