What Are Your Creative Uses for Coconut Oil?

Answered on September 12, 2014
Created July 12, 2011 at 6:54 PM

Having just purchased some "Dr. Bronner's" Coconut Oil, and being mindful of Dr. Bronner's love of using one product for a thousand things, I'm wondering . . .

What have you done (or tried to do) with Coconut Oil other than cooking with it or eating it by itself?

An obvious answer is to use as a body moisturizer, but is anyone finding it to be a wonder-substance that can be used for lots of other things like hair conditioner, face cream, burn salve, wood polish . . . ? Anything you tried to use it for, and it just didn't work out?

Thanks!

As a replacement for shaving cream. I don't completely shave my face all that often, mostly due to pure laziness but when I have a wedding or something to attend I pour a bunch in my hand, slather it on my face and shave away.

Supposedly coconut oil is the only conditioner/moisturizer that actually penetrates the hair shaft. Everything else just lays on top. And, you only need a dab rubbed on your palms then spread through your hair. Won't drip.

Coconut oil is the only moisturizer I use on my body, face included...mixed with baking soda or salt, it's a great toothpaste, mixed with arrowroot and baking powder it's deodorant, it's the only makeup remover I use, a tiny bit in my hair keeps the frizz to a minimum, and yup! It makes a great lubricant, though I wouldn't trust what someone else posted about it not breaking down the latex in condoms, I don't see why it wouldn't.

I tried it as a deep conditioning treatment for my hair this past weekend, and it worked wonders. I also use it daily to remove my eye makeup.

I use it on my hair too. Heat it then slap it on and leave for a few hours then shampoo. Fabulous!

I use it on my son's eczema when he has a flare up, just rub it on and within a couple days it has usually disappeared. We avoid steroid creams that way.

I've heard that you can use coconut oil as a hair-styling balm. Haven't tried it yet because the melting point this time of year seems lower than the outside temperature, and oil streaming down my face is not appealing.

Supposedly coconut oil is the only conditioner/moisturizer that actually penetrates the hair shaft. Everything else just lays on top. And, you only need a dab rubbed on your palms then spread through your hair. Won't drip.

I melt a dime size amount in my hands and then use it in my hair instead of gel...work great!

And this works in hot weather, too? I mainly need something to keep the frizz back, but the 90+ degree weather worries me this time of year.

It's become my hair styling product of choice - a VERY small amount, melted and worked into combed clean hair, keeps my curls happy even in the D.C. summer air.

It's also a key ingredient in my homemade deodorant, my favorite body moisturizer, nice lip balm, and a supplement to the baby lotion I put on my face during the summer. (Too greasy to use alone in hot weather; in winter I use it on its own.)
