Can someone explain fats to me?

I read coconut oil is 86% saturated fat. Yet I also read(in the same book) that half of it is short-chain fats. Im new to all this sciency stuff so sorry that this is so elementary. Are short-chain fats a type of saturated fat?

I was wrong. I hope that Dave S. and Mike T. read this. I'll even give you two a couple of pluses. I just heard Gary Taubes.

If saturated fats are good in the context of the SAD, how come all of those studies show that people die sooner when they eat a lot of saturated fats?

Saturated fats are protective against liver damage (at least in rats) even in the context of a crappy diet. And saturated fats have NO ASSOCIATION AT ALL with heart disease - even in the context of a crap-in-a-bag (or standard American diet). There is absolutely no earthly (or unearthly) reason to blame saturated fats for anything no matter what else is being eaten. In other words, look to the what else instead.

Saturated fats are not bad in the context of the standard American diet. They aren't bad in any context. Our bodies store excess fuel as saturated fat. It is a very natural and healthy fuel source for us.

Medium chain fatty acids are a type of fatty acid that is in fats. It isn't saturated or not, just shows what form the bonds are in.

Mike's got it, Medium chain fatty acids are highly touted by Mark Sisson over at MDA, which is why coconut products are so common in paleo/primal diets.

I highly recommend reading Mark Sisson's guides to:

Fats

Cholesterol

Saturated Fats

Fish Oils

Each of these posts is short and sweet, and i can almost guarantee you after you have slowly read all four of them you will have a much better idea of fats role in our diet, good fats, bad fats, and alot of the science behind them.

I think coconut is rich in medium chain saturated fatty acids.

Here is a good starting point for info about fats:

hancy18, I think that EricAmz and Mike may be missing your question. Saturated fats are only bad in the context of the standard American diet. In a low carb diet, saturated fats are just plain good. So medium chained fatty acids, as in coconut oil, are beyond terrific. And being saturated is not a liability. It is an asset.
