[META] Does everyone know you are supposed to close your open questions?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I didn't know this and never used the green check mark to "accept as answered" / "close".

Because I've asked soo many questions, and received such excellent information, I never wanted to offend anyone by accepting one person's answer and not others.

It wasn't until recently that I realized that unanswered questions bubble back up to the main page and tend to annoy the hard-core paleo-hackers (which I certainly didn't want to do).

I spent two hours yesterday during a Dexter Season 6 marathon, closing all my open questions.

So, on behalf of all the users here who have been helped soo much by others sharing their knowledge, THANK YOU!

Mike

As long as it doesn't periodically get bounced to the front page and bother people, that's all I care about. If anyone wants to answer and comment on an old post, that's cool.

Thanks for letting me know about the new website behavior. That will save me lots of time.

I also hated having to pick the best answer - always felt it would offend someone.

this may 'bug' you a bit as well, given the subject line of this question, your questions are actually still open. answers can still be added. but accepting an answer did stop it 'bubbling to the top' (on the old site).

you can actually Close a question as well, & select 'The question is answered, right answer was accepted'. this will disable answers. but comments can still be added...unless you also choose to 'Lock comments' (a separate option).

"unanswered questions bubble back up to the main page"...to newer PH users, this use to occur on the prev site, it no longer happens (at the date of this comment anyway, i guess it could be reintroduced in the future)

There is a bit of inherent irony in this question. I'd be bothered by it still being open, if not for the fact that it means that it'll keep popping up on the front page and hopefully encourage other people to close their questions.

click the checkbox (it's just below the # that indicates how many votes, which is to the left of the question)

Ironically, I got no answer to this question, so I left it open. I like your answer but I'm not sure I want to accept it as the "final answer" :-)

@greymouser: I guess I'm only 1/3rd the hard-core PH as you (with your 16k in 1 year :-)

I recently saw a few of the regulars express some frustration on 2 year old calls popping up, so I figured I'd invest a few hours at being a good caveman citizen (tribe member?) :-)

1 year, ~4.7k points - you are a hard-core paleo hacker. ;-) While you are "supposed to" eventually accept an answer, did people actually get annoyed? Props to closing / accepting-answer on your questions, though. :-)

I didn't get a response that helped me, so should I leave it open or close it? I mean, peoples' answers just didn't give me anything I need -- true, surgery is an option but surgery isn't an option, you know? Saying herbal tea for a condition that has killed family members ain't gonna cut it.

If it's wrong to leave it open, I can close it, though.
