How dangerous are melamine foam sponges (magic erasers)?

Not sure how Paleo this question is but I really hope it is somehow covered by the Paleo umbrella.

A friend of mine gave me some melamine foam sponges which are called magic erasers. She said they are great for cleaning counter tops. Well, they are. But while I was wiping off the surface in front of my other friend, that person told me that they are dangerous and lead to kidney damage. I did not see any apparent warnings on the label, but apparently some babies even died from ingesting it and could be lethal if absorbed through skin?

So, should I throw them away? How dangerous are they? Thank you in advance.

This is exactly why MSDSs are utter worthless.

Don't know, copy and paste sometimes get broken, usually related to comments. Your valiant attempt at typing almost worked, but I hope I edited it with the correct intended link. :)

I really can't make the carcinogenic call, I mean I use them, they're a light grade sandpaper with added chemical cleaning agents, but even from the MSDS I wouldn't be able to say without question that the magic eraser is anymore dangerous to me than the regular air pollutants I breath in daily living in a big city.

As long as you don't eat them, or allow your pets to eat them, they should be ok. If they leave some sort of melamine residue, and your cat/dog/baby licks the counter, it may have issues. So maybe wipe after using them with a moist paper towel?

Scaremongering. Don't eat it, but it's not toxic. MSDSs are largely meaningless jibberish, speaking as a chemist who has to deal with MSDSs daily.

Complete MSDS

(corrected link)

I had to type that out by hand..any idea WHY Paleohacks does not seem to allow me to copy and past like the advanced Grok that I am? Or is this a bug?

Truth.
