Did Paleo man peel citrus fruits?

It seems strange to me that we peel orange, lemon, etc. Did Paleo man also do this? It seems like he may have lacked the tools. Cirtus peel extracts are used, among other things, to treat heartburn so I'm wondering if this may be part of the reason that we get heartburn and they didn't.

Pleasing the wife is more important than optimal nutrition in my experience.

My husband eats lemon peels. Like them tremendously.

I agreee with Renee. We may not know all the details of Paleo man, but I'm pretty sure he had hands.

Citrus peel is good, the pith is not. You could grate the peel off citrus fruit and drink it in a cup of hot water (or just eat it). The pith I can imagine is just fibre and not really worth the hassle.

Orange peel contains citral, an aldehyde that antagonizes the action of vitamin A. Therefore, anyone eating orange peels should make certain that their dietary intake of Vitamin A is sufficient.

I would say the main reason we peel our citrus fruit is because a million years ago someone took a large bite out of an orange and realised that the best bit was inside. The peel could then just be thrown on the fire to make the cave smell nice to please the wife.

I don't know what any Paleo woman did. I now grow my own lemons and limes and the peels are thin and soft and taste delicious. I know there is nothing sprayed on them. I would not eat commercial peels b/c I don't know what is lingering in them.

I can't imagine them eating the peels if the citrus fruit back then was anything like today's. Bitter means "do not eat!" One thing we can to is observe how other primates eat citrus fruit.

I'm guessing you're more itnerested in if they ate the peel. I'd be surprised if they didn't at least use their teeth to get in. The fruit would be quite different to what we're used to as well, the peel might have been the tastiest part.

Heartburn? Since giving up grains I never get heartburn/acid reflux. I used to take Nexium and still have a half box unfinished from 2 years ago.

It isn't exactly an answer to your question, but I remember a test on chimps with traditional versus organic bananas. The traditional bananas got peeled by them, peel thrown away while the organic ones were eaten in one piece. They just went ape over them.

So I don't really know if the same happens with citrus fruits, but I do think so.
