*THE* Cholesterol Poll

Answered on September 12, 2014
Created April 27, 2012 at 8:28 PM

***Thank you everyone who has responded. The bounty was rewarded via the computer (I had no hand in it). I would place another one if there was an option for it! I will compile the results this weekend (after midterms). Once again thank you!

A bounty has been added to hopefully generate more responses I dont care if you drain all of my points this is more important=)

Purpose: To get some numbers and potentially see some trends.

This is not: about whether cholesterol is good/bad or causes anything. That topic can be discussed elsewhere but it is best if it is kept separate.

I will compile the numbers after a reasonable amount of time/responses.

  1. Has your cholesterol raised after going paleo? Be sure to specify hdl or ldl and any other numbers that seem relevant.

  2. Do you follow strict paleo? Dairy? Legumes? Grains?

  3. 80/20, 100% or somewhere in between?

  4. Macro ratio? What is your carb intake?

  5. Do you eat a variety of vegtables?

  6. fruit? Berries?

  7. Have you had a heart attack or been diagnosed with any heart troubles since going paleo? (correlation does not equal causation- lets just get some numbers)

  8. How long have you been paleo and what was your diet beforehand? Vegan? SAD?

  9. Age? Sex? General gentic background if known?

  10. Physical fitness? What type?

  11. Do you practice IF (intermittent fasting) or ADF (alternate day fasting)? (Thank you Nance for the suggestion)

Thank you all very much. I realize that may take a little bit of time to answer but I think that it will be helpful for everyone. If you feel that I have missed an important question to ask please let me know and I will add it!!

I think you should have also asked: nuts? paleo baked goods (like coconut/tapioca/almond flours)? homemade bone broth? ratio of animal fat vs vegetable fat?

determine your ratio of triglycerides to HDL cholesterol, If you ratio is less than 2, you have predominantly large, fluffy LDL particles that are not going to do you much harm. If your ratio is greater than 4, you have a lot of small, dense LDL particles that can accelerate the development of atherosclerotic plaques" That is the imortant part..not just the cholesterol number. Google 2 types LDL

Cholesterol changes:

Yes, cholesterol went up slightly. Doctor wanted me on statins. I'm 22. I politely declined. Doctor said to follow-up in a couple months. I never went back.

HDL: 75

Triglycerides: 30

LDL: 192

CRP: <0.5

Do you follow strict paleo? Dairy? Legumes? Grains?

I eat real food, pretty much all the time. Dairy, legumes, and grains only occasionally, and when I do, only high quality cheeses, properly prepared legumes, and rice/corn, respectively. Worst? A bite of something sugary + gluten-ated (cake, pastry, cookie...etc.) I don't go out of my way to buy "occasionals," or cheats. Nuts as garnish.

80/20? 100%? Or somewhere in between?

Difficult to answer correctly. I'd say 90%, but this can be notoriously inaccurate. If it's not real food, I probably won't eat it. Red wine and dark chocolate, here and there (every couple weeks). Ice cream here and there, but much less (every couple months).

Macro ratio? What is your carb intake?

Don't take much notice. Food quality is more important to me. If I were to estimate, probably around 100 g of each macro/day. Can vary, given activity, and what I'm feeling.

Do you eat a variety of vegetables?

Wow. Yes. Tons of variety. Mostly the stuff in season.

Fruit? Berries?

Yes. Not everyday though. When I feel like it. Fresh n' delicious. Stayin' in season.

Have you had a heart attack or been diagnosed with any heart troubles since going paleo? (correlation does not equal causation- lets just get some numbers)

Nope.

How long have you been paleo and what was your diet beforehand? Vegan? SAD?

2 years now. 1 year before as pescatarian. Before that was SAD, ate some cereal and bread, some sugary stuff, and didn't take notice about food quality, however, no food addictions or overeating problems, and was very active.

Age? Sex? General genetic background if known?

Male. 22. Taiwanese. Whitewashed, sorta. Parents think we (I have a sister) have bad cholesterol genes. I think it's SAD-induced hype about high cholesterol. Raised as yolk-tossing folks. Learned. Now eat yolks, and sometimes add only yolks to omelette fun.

Physical fitness? What type?

Ex-competitive swimmer, 9 years (Eating random junk all the time (Ramen, pizza, pasta, sugary sports drinks). Still mostly lean. Now do mostly breakdance/bboy, 5 years going. Performance has gotten better since Paleo. Went from a bit chub (SAD) to energy-less skeleton (pescatarian) to strong, flexible n' agile (Paleo). Sometimes do some light weightlifting. Standing-work desk and moving around all day.

Do you practice IF (intermittent fasting) or ADF (alternate day fasting)? (Thank you Nance for the suggestion)

I tried IF. It didn't seem to work too well. I wasn't hungry all the time, so I knew I was burning fat. Sometimes felt crummy, and thought too much about food. Not sure why it didn't work. Will try again sometime. Right now, doing three solid meals a day. Love breakfast. Lunch is meh. Dinner is good, and mostly early.

Happy to share, remember it's n=1.

90% Primal

Macro ratio? What is your carb intake?

Don't track - LC to VLC (<150 to <50), protein probably not too far behind fat

Do you eat a variety of vegtables?

Yes, regularly; carrots, peppers, cucumber, sunchokes, asparagus, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, kale, spinach, arugula, onion, garlic, tomato, radishes, beets, sauerkraut, turnip, parsnip, rutabaga, maybe two sweet potatoes per week.

Half raw - am eliminating crucifers for a month and eating sea vegetables.

fruit? Berries?

Berries two times per week, little other fruit.

Have you had a heart attack or been diagnosed with any heart troubles since going paleo?

nope

This is my first post here. I've been Paleo for close to a year and lurking here for almost as long. I figured I would add my numbers for reference, especially since dairy gets a bad rap for raising ldl around here.

Has your cholesterol raised after going paleo? Be sure to specify hdl or ldl and any other numbers that seem relevant.

My cholesterol has gone down. I don't have exact numbers from pre paleo, but I know my triglycerides were above the 150 range and total cholesterol was around 240. After 3 months of Paleo my numbers were Total 220 LDL 136 HDL 65 Trigs 92. After 9 months Paleo Total 203 LDL 109 HDL 64 Trigs 66 with a VLDL of 15 (only 9 of that is the small dense kind)

Do you follow strict paleo? Dairy? Legumes? Grains?

No legumes or grains but I am the dairy queen. Probably 50% of my calories come from grassfed cream, butter and cheese.

80/20, 100% or somewhere in between?

probably about 95% - the only thing that sneaks in (if you dont count dairy) is sugar and seed oils from eating out. Never any grains or legumes.

Macro ratio? What is your carb intake?

Fairly low carb. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis and try to keep very low starch, so my carbs end up being low as a result of that. I have been trying to up the veggies and fruit lately to see if that will help with some fatigue I have been having. I am probably at 30% protein 60% fat and 10% carbs at the moment.

Do you eat a variety of vegtables?

Not as many as I should. I eat leafy greens, asparagus, onions, garlic and mushrooms a lot, but I do get stomach issues with many veggies (broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, peppers)

fruit? Berries?

I eat all kinds of berries and the occasional apple

Have you had a heart attack or been diagnosed with any heart troubles since going paleo? (correlation does not equal causation- lets just get some numbers)

nope

How long have you been paleo and what was your diet beforehand? Vegan? SAD?

Been Paleo for 11 months - diet before that was real food SAD. I ate grassfed, pastured and organic. Most of my food was cooked from scratch but it was extremely grain, legume and sugar heavy. Started Paleo to combat PCOS, NAFLD and Ankylosing Spondylitis. All of my ailments have greatly improved and I have lost 40 pounds.

Age? Sex? General gentic background if known?

32 year old female with genetic background 75% mixed Scandinavian (swedish and danish) 25% Irish. APoE 3/3

Physical fitness? What type?

Hiking a few times a week and generally up and moving all day, but no dedicated exercising.

Do you practice IF (intermittent fasting) or ADF (alternate day fasting)? (Thank you Nance for the suggestion)

I did IF for awhile, but not before the cholesterol test were taken. I just quit recently because of pregnancy.

Has your cholesterol raised after going paleo? Be sure to specify hdl or ldl and any other numbers that seem relevant.
Only know that triglycerides were very high in the past. I had NAFLD.
Checked cholesterol in March: my triglycerides were 70-something, HDL 68.

Do you follow strict paleo? Dairy? Legumes? Grains?
I was strict at first, because I was in very bad health. Now: butter nearly everyday, heavy cream once per week, beans once per month, grains twice per month?

80/20, 100% or somewhere in between? I'd say 95%.

Macro ratio? What is your carb intake?
Atleast 65% fat, completely from animal sources. My carbs are usually about 50 to 100g.

Do you eat a variety of vegtables?
Yes. Half my plate is vegetables. I make sure to eat plenty from each type and color. I always make dark green leafy vegetables a priority among other vegetables.

fruit? Berries?
I rarely eat fruit, I don't have a sweet tooth. I eat very little fruit. About once per month.

Have you had a heart attack or been diagnosed with any heart troubles since going paleo?
No. Had arrhythmia before paleo.

How long have you been paleo and what was your diet beforehand? Vegan? SAD?
I was lucky to eat Paleo/WAPF growing up!
Then I immigrated to USA in my late teens, and ate SAD. Lunch was the standard cafeteria junk, or a sandwich of little substance, with some potato chips. Snack was often candy bars or muffins. Dinner was nearly always that disgusting Italian-American restaurant food. This lasted about 4 years.
Once I started getting really, really ill, I tried to eat "better", which meant extremely low fat, low meat, high carb.
Cereal and skim milk every 1 hour, because I was starving. Sandwiches with little meat or fat, for lunch. Cereal with skim milk every hour, because I was starving. Most dinners were: 1 chicken breast cooked with PAM spray, lots of rice or barley, a few vegetables on the side.
I've been Paleo for one year.

Age? Sex? General gentic background if known?
25, Female, Portuguese (that super cool little country west of Spain).

Physical fitness? What type?
I'm sedentary. I rarely walk. If I do, it's about 2 miles. Even without exercise, I still gained a lot of muscle and bone density since going paleo. My muscles and bones were very wasted, I was terribly weak.

Do you practice IF (intermittent fasting) or ADF (alternate day fasting)? (Thank you Nance for the suggestion)
IF, yes, often. I generally eat breakfast and lunch, I'm not hungry for dinner. ADF maybe once per month if not hungry.

You asked for it....

I have 13 lipid panels since 8/31/2009 (suffered a mild NSTEMI @ 34yo). Not sure what the best format is for this but I'll give it a shot. Let me preface by saying I found out I am ApoE2/4 so my results are far from typical.

Has your cholesterol raised after going paleo? Be sure to specify hdl or ldl and any other numbers that seem relevant. My total cholesterol went down (200ish->170ish); hdl stayed about the same (40s somewhere). Triglycerides went to 68 from I'm-not-sure (I never inquired).

Do you follow strict paleo? Dairy? Legumes? Grains? I follow the Archevore approach, although I haven't really gotten onboard the recent "add starch" stuff all that much. Dairy is in; legumes, grains/seed oils, sugar mostly out (some sugar creeps back in).

80/20, 100% or somewhere in between? Somewhere in between, I think.

Macro ratio? What is your carb intake? I'm pretty low carb - try to stay 50-75g/day. Last time I checked I ran about 67% fat intake, protein whatever was left.

Do you eat a variety of vegetables? Not a huge variety. Lots of salads. We eat nightshades. Nothing terribly exotic.

fruit? Berries? Some - I vary breakfast by having strawberries and cream or by having Nikoley's Fat Bomb Smoothie with mixed frozen berries. Trying to eat fruit more seasonally, so will be increasing consumption this summer.

Have you had a heart attack or been diagnosed with any heart troubles since going paleo? (correlation does not equal causation- lets just get some numbers) Nope.

How long have you been paleo and what was your diet beforehand? Vegan? SAD? Just over 2 years (started 4/4/10), and was SAD before.

Age? Sex? General gentic background if known? 50, Female, northern european mongrel.

Physical fitness? What type? I'm sedentary. Occasional attempts to do more organized exercise usually dwindle. I participate in 5- and 10-K racewalks every so often.

Do you practice IF (intermittent fasting) or ADF (alternate day fasting)? (Thank you Nance for the suggestion) Yes - IF. Initially used to break weight loss stalls; now I skip breakfast and lunch if I'm running late in the morning, or if I wake up feeling "off", or if I've been eating SAD things.

  1. Probably? I don't have numbers from before, but TC was recently measured at 253, HDL 61, Trigs 96, LDL calculated at 173 (I'm getting a VAP in a couple weeks).

  2. No, a fair amount of dairy. I also have rice occasionally, maybe once or twice a week.

  3. I don't cheat much. I never have the really bad stuff like deep-fried food. When I do cheat, it's usually an organic rice-flour pizza or green tea ice cream.

  4. Haven't measured in a while. I estimate it's 20% carb, 30% protein, 50% fat.

  5. Yes, a decent amount of veggies.

  6. Yes, one to three pieces of fruit most days.

  7. No, although my blood pressure was bordering on hypertensive before paleo and still isn't quite normal.

  8. Been paleo for a year and a half, since 10/10. I was eating "healthy SAD", lots of grains, fruits, and veggies and low meat/fat.

  9. 28/M

  10. I lift for about three hours each week and occasionally do cardio.

  11. Sometimes I do IF, but not regularly. More commonly I will go until the early afternoon on only a couple fruits, if I'm not particularly hungry. I find the sugar helps keep me mentally energized in my programming job.

Excellent idea of the poll on cholesterol. If we can get a 50+ responses I am prepared to help with some tool on the net (google docs?) to have the poll automatised.

OOHH I love polls!

  1. Unfortunately I don't know what it was before going paleo-ish.. but as of February my total cholesterol was 216mg/dL, LDL 133 and HDL 70.
  2. I do not follow strict paleo.. I did for a while, but my activity levels felt too high to maintain such a low carb deal.
  3. I eat and drink much dairy. Mostly in the form of grass fed milk and cheese.. and then cultured dairy products such as kefir and yogurt.
  4. Macros vary depending on activity level for the day. On non workout days approx 50/30/20, protein/carbs/fat and on workout days 30/60/10 5.I was a longtime vegan/vegetarian so my love of vegetables runs deep. I eat approximately 2-3 pounds of veg a day.
  5. I also eat about 1-2 pounds of fruit a day mostly in the form of bananas or berries depending on time of day or workout.
  6. no heart problems here.
  7. I discovered paleo about 2 years ago.. before that I was a vegetarian for 13 years and vegan for 2 of those.
  8. 29yo/female. I have no history of disease and no known history of familial disease. 10.I exercise a lot. Probably more than is paleo ;) I was a distance runner until I discovered that is probably bad.. I still run about 15 miles a week. I also follow a sort of lean gains protocol in which I pick up a lot of heavy stuff a few times a week. In addition I attend occasional boot camps, run stairs, do sprints, and try to stand whenever possible.

Yes, like Nance said IF practice should be included. I practice IF on a daily basis. I'm a 16/8 faster.

You should have asked about fasting. I practice either IF (intermittent fasting) or modified ADF(alternate-day fasting.)

??? Has your cholesterol raised after going paleo? He sure to specify hdl or ldl and any other numbers that seem relevant. Mine rose a little, from around 160 to 178. LDL 90, HDL 73, VLDL 13, TRI 77, CHOL/HDL 2.4

??? Do you follow strict paleo? No. In addition to generous amounts of fatty meat, fruit and vegetables I eat homemade extra-fat yogurt, heavy cream, butter and I drink water kefir. I eat very few nuts.

??? Dairy? As described above.

??? Macro ratio. What is your carb intake By food volume, 60-80% veg/fruit, 10% dairy, the rest is meat; carb intake ranges between 60 and 200g

??? 80/20, 100% or somewhere in between? Wide range in a random pattern based on appetite

??? Do you eat a variety of vegtables? Yes, mostly raw in summer and a mix of raw and cooked in winter

??? fruit? Berries? 1-4 cups of fruit per day. My staples are grapefruit, berries and bananas; occasional include grapes, cherries, kiwis, melons and mangos

??? Have you had a heart attack or been diagnosed with any heart troubles since going paleo? (correlation does not equal causation- lets just get some numbers) No

??? How long have you been paleo and what was your diet beforehand? Vegan? SAD? SAD

EDIT: I left out that I am 65, Russian/Polish/Scottish ancestry. I don't do any intense exercise, but I do a lot of walking and do as many tasks manually as possible at home and when shopping.

Has your cholesterol raised after going paleo? Be sure to specify hdl or ldl and any other numbers that seem relevant.

Yes, went from 43 HDL/ 80 LDL to about 47/103. Triglycerides fell from the 80s to the 70s.

Do you follow strict paleo? Dairy? Legumes? Grains?

I was limiting dairy because I'm trying to lean out a bit, but now I use a ton of heavy cream on the weekends. I love either whipped cream or sugar free instant pudding (made with heavy cream) as a desert. Limited cheese. No legumes. No grain (at least I try not to)

80/20, 100% or somewhere in between?

I'd like to think I'm somewhere above 80%. I aim for 100% but I'm happy getting 85-90%. I aim for ketosis, but I typically slide out of keto on the weekends due to aforementioned heavy cream, whipped cream, and pudding habits.

Macro ratio? What is your carb intake?

Carbs I always aim for <20g net, and <50g total. I don't always hit the targets but those are my aiming marks. I aim for keto (trying to mimic Peter Attia) but I'm not strict about testing my pee (too inaccurate) or blood (too expensive). My macro ratio is about 65% fat/ 25% protein / 10% carbs.

Do you eat a variety of vegtables?

Leafy green vegetables. Spinach, cabbage (and kraut), brussels, lots of kale. I don't know if it should be considered a fruit or vegetable, but it's green so I'll list it here: avocado. I eat tons of it. When I'm on the road for work I go to whole foods for dinner and eat a container of guacamole every night.

fruit? Berries?

None. Occasional handful of berries every 3-4 weeks or so. I don't really miss it.

Have you had a heart attack or been diagnosed with any heart troubles since going paleo? (correlation does not equal causation- lets just get some numbers)

No, but then again I'm young and relatively active.

How long have you been paleo and what was your diet beforehand? Vegan? SAD?

Paleo-ish since Jan 1, 2012. SAD. Super-SAD, actually. Bread is my favorite food.

Age? Sex? General gentic background if known?

25/M

Physical fitness? What type?

Pretty decent fitness (Army Reservist). I try to run regularly, and I recently started a LeanGains/Starting Strength inspired gym regimen. Training for a marathon.

Do you practice IF (intermittent fasting) or ADF (alternate day fasting)? (Thank you Nance for the suggestion)

I tried ADF but I found it unpleasant. Now I IF on a 16/8 schedule most of the time. I don't typically IF on the weekends because I travel all week and I want to have breakfast with my family on the weekend.

  1. TCHOL, HDL, LDL all raised, but healthy (don't have VLDL numbers).

  2. Primal + dairy (though that's mostly kefir, yogurt, and butter), and occasionally legumes

  3. Probably 85/15 or 80/20 (I try not to think too much about it)

  4. Carb intake a little higher than most because I'm an ectomorph and find I do better with a little more.

  5. Tons of veggies

  6. Decent amount of fruit, though mostly in the form of avocado, berries, citrus, and bananas.

  7. No cardiovascular issues

  8. Paleo about a year. Prior diet had less fat, but was probably healthier than SAD.

  9. 30 y/o M of varied Celtic/Germanic descent

  10. I'm fortunate enough to be relatively fit naturally (i.e. didn't go paleo to fix anything). My exercise these days is severely limited due to time constraints, but I still do bodyweight training and yoga periodically. In about a month I'll be riding my bike nearly every day, playing frisbee regularly, and possibly even mild weight training or jiu jitsu.

  11. I don't fast intentionally.

Looking forward to the compilation of results!
