Is cholesterol an umbrella?

Like many of us here, I try to incorporate and synthesize that which I read. While it does appear there is some sort of relationship between cholesterol and heart disease, the linkage is far from clear. Is it possible that cholesterol is linked to heart disease because it is the body's way of trying to fix other problems? If that's the case it would also explain why lower cholesterol generally is aligned with health: there are lesser underlying problems the body is trying to address. It would also expain the ambiguous relationship between cholesterol and diet: eating it doesn't impact, positively or negatively, the body's need for it.

The simplistic analogy is an umbrella. Clearly, there is an observable correlation between rain and umbrellas. That being said, can we prevent rain by banning umbrellas?

Lower cholesterol isn't associated with health, lower cholesterol is associated with increased cancer rates and all cause mortality...
