Best Saturated Fat Paleo Foods!?

Answered on August 19, 2014

What are good or your favorite high in saturated paleo foods? I need ideas. I currently try to use bacon fat or extra virgin coconut oil with my eggs in the AM. I eat an avocado a day ... I need more ideas :( Also, I eat gluten free.

What about cheeses? I wasn't sure about them, so Ive been using very little. Although, I LOVE cottage cheese. Is that ok?

Yes, cows are ruminants. They convert a lot of the fat they consume to saturated.

I use like 2 tbsp of the dried fruit with my coconut banana about once a week :)

@Fallinwhisper Honestly, I would watch the amount of dried fruit you consume, especially if it's daily. Stick the the real thing, when you there. :-) As a sometimes food, dried fruits are just fine though.

Dairy eaters may not ever ascend to the paleo priesthood, but they are welcomed in our Church of Paleohackery.

When I get a sweet tooth I will cut up a banana and sprinkle coconut flakes on it with either some organic dried cranberries or cherries ... mmmmmmm. So, you say more coconut oil, less bacon grease? Other than coconuts, anything else I can try to eat say for lunch that has a good dose of SFA? Sometimes I bring a steak that was cooked the night before, or homemade chicken salad. Just trying to work it into more meals than just breakfast.

All animal fats are good but it's better for it to come from a ruminant in my opinion. Butter/ghee is also great. If you are going to eat cheese, I suggest Gouda, because gouda is the only cheese with the highest amounts of vitamin k2.

First things first:

  • Bacon grease is less than 50% SFA. (It is closer to EVOO than it is to coconut oil.)
  • Avocados are about 75% MUFA, 12% SFA.

Most meats come naturally with a good spectrum of all fats SFA/MUFA/PUFA. I would say they are your best whole food source, while coconut oil is your best cooking or supplemental source. Coconut oil is a great SFA source, it's great to cook with, and it sure is tasty.

Coconut is always a good source! Dried coconut, coconut oil, coconut milk. All that is good stuff!

Also grass-fed butter (Kerrygold is a good brand) is great!

Dairy is out so forget cheese, gGrains are out, so gluten free should be fairly easy (although its hidden in lots of things) Bacon is awful for you. If your eating bacon and cheese you dont need to worry about adding any saturated fat, I assure you that you are getting enough.

Eggs cooked in coconut oil will have alot of saturated fat as well. SOunds like you have it covered on the fats.
