Coffee can mess with your dopamine regulation, causing you to crave things that'll jack it up again. But I've new info. I usually take 200mcg chromium. Forum says 1000mcg stop sugar cravings and sometimes hunger in general. For the last two days I've spread out 5x200mcg chromium glycinate daily, and not only am I not hungry, I haven't craved anything at all! It's the first two days in a month that powerful cravings were not there.

I treat the cause instead of the symptom. So whatever is causing me stress must be solved and relaxing happens via a massage, social contact, sport, hobbies,... but not via food.

The only micronutrient test I've gotten on myself is the Exatest, for intracellular potassium and magnesium. The state of medical testing is changing constantly, and I'm not up to date on everything. Just listening to Chris Kresser podcasts, where he mentions a test I've never heard of each time, leaves me amazed. That said, do the Google search for "calcium tissue test" and you'll get some options.

Pizza and wontons have grains and ice cream has lots of sugar. I'm not convinced it's the dairy that you're craving. If you were eating lots of plain yogurt or milk, that might be more convincing...

Pizza, ice cream, and wontons are appealing junk food, not "dairy foods," even if they contain dairy. If you were binging on, say, cottage cheese and yogurt I could imagine it having something to do with dairy.

No, this is not a deficiency. You do not crave pizza, Chinese food and wontons because of mineral/vitamin deficiencies.

It might be worthwhile to get some lab tests done to assess your micronutrient status. The obvious candidate is calcium tissue testing (google "calcium tissue test").

If the combination of sweet and dairy is calling to you, you can put some L-Glutamine powder under your tongue to dampen the sweet craving. Chromium piccolinate has also been suggested as a supplement to dampen sugar cravings. This Paleohacks thread discusses this supplementation combo.

Also, you can make a faux chocolate-orange mousse that might satisfy a dairy craving:

  • 1 C yogurt (full-fat)
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • paleo sweetener of your choice, to taste
  • 1/4 tsp. cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp. orange extract
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp. psyllium seed husk (not paleo ??? so sue me)

Put the yogurt in a bowl, then add the dry ingredients, and stir. Add the liquid ingredients and stir again. Wait 5 minutes for mixture to stiffen, then eat.

Regarding the Chinese dish, commercially-prepared American Chinese foods have lots of chemicals added to enhance their flavor, and these chemicals might be a trigger for you. It's also possible that these chemicals themselves aren't a direct trigger, but a cross-contaminant trigger. That is, you're problem isn't with the dish, per se, but some chemical in it mimics a more fundamental problem, resulting in the craving.

Are you drinking coffee? I just posted about my recent exploding addiction to ice cream here:

http://paleohacks.com/questions/165429/coffee-causing-uncontrollable-sugar-cravings-akin-to-drug-addiction#axzz2DzdyOpf2

I'm having ice cream cravings like you cannot imagine, and not for anything else. I already take probiotics, chromium, and I'm pretty sure I'm not deficient.

Coffee is the only new variable that preceded this craving!

Whenever I go through a period of high stress, dairy is my number one craving. You may be seeking out for dairy comfort foods because you're stressed out aka you're being an emotional eater.
