affordable produce: Angel Food Ministries (not organic)

If you are stuck in an area like I am where organic produce just isn't even sold, so you're stuck paying grocery store prices for inferior (pesticide laden) produce, this might be of interest:

I just finally tried Angel Food Ministries. Their produce box is $24 and has a lot in it. It was about the size and weight of one of those giant boxes of copy paper you get when you work in an office.

It comes with 4 ears of corn, but you could hang them to dry and then throw them in your yard for birds and bunnies this winter. The white potatoes could be given to SAD friends or if you have kids, carve them into stamps for an old fashioned craft project. They substituted a honeydew for my potatoes and celery so I don't even have potatoes to deal with!

The "after school" snack box (the fresh one, not the shelf stable one) has a bunch of produce too, and the cheap peanut butter could get donated to your local dog pound for doggie treats and you'd probably still save money.

This isn't a low-income program. It's for all income levels, and before you say you don't want to steal from the poor people, it's been explained to me that the more people involved, then the more people they can help, so they encourage people with plenty of money to purchase. You can purchase any of the specialty boxes without one of the main SAD boxes.

Ordering online was really easy and pickup took about 30 seconds. Hawaii is the only state that I know of that doesn't have a pickup site.

This is a WONDERFUL link. My mother would greatly benefit from a program like this. Thank you very much.

I had no idea they had programs like that, I assumed all "charity" type of places only dealt with the poor. Thanks for the info +1
