Why aren't I losing any weight? Am i eating too much? Or not enough or not the right things.

Hi All,

I started paleo almost 3 months ago. In the last year I managed to put on 15 lbs and the year before that about 10, so I need to lose approx 25 lbs.

I figured the weight would come flying off since I've been eating SO clean. I had zero alcohol for the first 6 weeks. My clothes are exactly as tight as they were when i started. I'm completely baffled since as how i went from eating containers of Ben and Jerry's and eating TONS of carbs to having only paleo foods.

I admit I could probably workout more- but i was hoping to lose SOME weight before I showed up at the gym. So i've been inconsistent with my workouts. My daily diet goes something like this:

Breakfast- Green Smoothie (kale, swiss chard, half an avocado, spinach, cucumber, lime juice and a few chunks of pineappel)

Lunch- 2 eggs fried in butter with ground meat in tomato sauce

Snack- 1 banana, 2 tbs of peanut butter, cocoa powder and 2 tbs of coconut milk kefir

Dinner- Usually meat like 2 drumsticks, or ground beef, or oxtail soup. with a side of cherry tomatoes.

Sometimes I'll have a few berries. And sometimes i'll drink bone broth throughout the day (3 times)

I'm wondering- Do i need to cut my midafternoon snack? ( i crave it so bad every day but once i eat it, im not hungry for HOURS)

Or do i need to be eating MORE? (i would be surprised if that's the case.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, if I were going to drink a raw green smoothie every morning for an extended amount of time I would choose the cucumber, lime romaine, lettuce above the spinach, chard kale for sure.

I mean, raw spinach is all like oxalic acid, raw kale is all like goitrogen this goitrogen that and raw chard just sounds like if kale and spinach F'ed and had a baby. I don't expect you to thumbs up me, but that's my gut feeling. I'd have like celery cucumber juice instead or something, it's just soo much lighter.

I guess I've never had to track what i ate to see weight loss. My whole adult life, any time i wanted to lose 10lbs I would just cut out a few things and workout a bit harder and I would see a difference within a few days. This is the first time in my life that ive made BIG changes with absolutely no weight loss. When I said "something like this" it's because I dont eat the same exact thing every day.

No, I just don't like the idea of drinking kale chard and spinach raw long term. That seems like a problem waiting to happen.

"something like this"...? If you are serious about losing weight I would recommend you TRACK EVERYTHING YOU PUT INTO YOUR MOUTH. That may not be the popular opinion on this board, but I believe it 100%. I'm down almost 60 lbs since last August and this is the reason. Guessing what you are eating not only is a disservice to yourself, but it doesn't give you the control to run experiments and crunch data on how various foods effect your body and thus weight loss.

You're welcome. I bet you will start to see some results soon. I think you're wise to cut the PB snack. I predict that after forgoing the snack for a while you will stop craving it.

it's my understanding that paleo is about eating fattier meats to achieve satiety. Most of my life, i ate a low fat, high carb diet and for the most part have always been a healthy weight. BUT, I was always on a diet, always hungry, working out lots to stay that way. I have noticed that after the peanut butter, i always have a bit of indigestion. But not with any of the rest of my meals. Also the meat I consume is all organic, grass fed. No hormones or antibiotics.

My suggestion is to try tracking your caloric intake for a little while to get a handle on things. You will need a kitchen scale, a measuring cup, and some measuring spoons, as well as a tracking system - I find that fitday.com is pretty easy to use, but there are others. Once you have honestly assessed your intake for a period of days or weeks, you will know how to make adjustments. Based on the diet information that you included in your post, it's difficult to discern how many calories you are actually eating.

You have a project: lose 25 pounds. You have applied some effort, but you are not seeing results. So, something probably needs to change. To know what needs to change you will need some data. So, weigh and measure your food for a little while. Track it honestly and then you will know how to start tweaking things for results. Paleohackers will better be able to help you at that point.

Congrats on your effort though and your decision to make some positive change.

I'd say more meat/fish and way less of the other stuff (fruit, nut butter etc). I'd eat every meal as it if was dinner - meat, veg, fat. Should also reduce the need for snacks.

As someone who loves fruit, I have to caution you against eating pineapple and bananas. They are both very high in sugar. Omit them, along with pb, while you are trying to lose weight. I only allow myself a banana after a workout and had to cut out pineapple entirely.

I don't like your snack or your breakfast. I'd reconsider those foods, specifically peanuts and raw kale chard spinach juice.

Somebody started to say it, but food sensitivities vary from person to person. It is entirely possible the foods you gain weight against have not yet been cut from your diet. Also note, weight gain is an excess of calories, while weight maintenance is an equilibrium. At first glance, I'd say "fried in butter", peanut butter, and fatty/hormone-laden meats like ground beef or drumsticks are not strictly Paleo. You might want to try a process of addition instead of subtraction. Begin eating the bare minimum of healthy foods, journal how you feel after you eat, then add foods back in. If adding a food makes you feel tired, bloated, nauseous, etc. any time within a couple hours, your body probably doesn't like it.

Exercise, of course, helps too...but ultimately if you are eating something your body doesn't want, it will even make your workouts more difficult. Paleo is all about listening to your body???something contemporary humans have forgotten to slow down and do.

I'm in the same discovery phase you are, three months in. I've had a good amount of success, but am adjusting things as I hit plateaus. It is a fun process and I hope you can get to a point where you see the benefits and enjoyment in it as well!

I noticed that your breakfast has a lot of carbs, especially fructose. It also has little protein. When you eat carbs, always eat them with protein as it slows digestion and keeps your blood sugar more regulated. Also, fro my experience, I have found that glucose such as sweet potatoes or chestnuts is much more satisfying than fructose in fruit. You are eating a lot of fruit, which may explain why you are hungry and need to eat many meals per day.

Does anyone know where i can find example meal plans? I tried googling it and I've only found ones you need to pay for- without even giving a sample.

I don't really enjoy cooking vegetables or even eating them that much which is why i try to cram them into one smoothie so that i can get all the nutrients without having to eat veggies at every meal.

Everyone is different, but I almost never lose weight when I'm eating snacks. I find that if I craft my meals carefully -- just enough fat and protein -- I don't need snacks. So if I do need snacks, I did something wrong. And perhaps oddly, I find breakfast most important. If I don't have enough protein & fat at breakfast, I will need a snack after lunch -- regardless of what I ate for lunch.

So, I would experiment. Try a higher fat / protein breakfast. Or try adding the food from your afternoon snack to your lunch.

Also completely agree with Ralph. You might be eating an awful lot of calories. I don't think it really matters for now if you exercise, but it matters to your metabolism if you don't move at all. If you're spending most of your time sitting down, you're probably not burning many calories to begin with. So try adding some movement: stand more, take stairs, walk, etc.
