when calculating daily carb intake should one include fibre intake?

Just wondering seen as we don't use fibre for energy should it count towards carbs consumed that day.

This might sound like a silly question but I'm sure a few people have thought about this, I would have thought that you don't need to count your fibre intake to total carb intake.

It is my understanding that we are unable to digest fiber but that it aids in digestion. Fiber is not an energy source and should not be counted in total caloric intake.

I make a distinction and don't go over 50g period, and keep it under the 20 net carbs.

It depends on what approach you're going for. I personally lean towards Mark Sisson's Primal Blueprint Carb Curve (http://www.marksdailyapple.com/the-primal-carbohydrate-continuum/#axzz22jy793JB) and when he's talking, for example, maintenance at 100-150g carbs per day, he's talking total carbs. That's not to say that all carbs are equal or that net carbs don't matter, just that he's not breaking it down that far, not getting really nitty-gritty with the details.

That being said, I don't count my carbs or anything. I eat potatoes or fruit a few times a week, and the rest of my carbs come from non-starchy veggies, and I have a low appetite and I'm not trying to lose weight. I never go over any kind of calorie/carb limit if I'm eating my regular way, so I don't find that I need to count. But that's an individual decision based on individual goals and needs.

Whirl I don't think its a silly question.

I think most people here don't "count" carbs or anything else but my understanding is that its only Net Carbs that matter when counting carbs (which I did once and got fat ;)

Total carbs minus fiber equals Net Carbs.
