What source of carbs you feel best on?

Answered on September 12, 2014

I've been paleo for 1 month now and like it a lot! Eating lots of eggs, meat, fish and veggies gives me lots of energy and motivation. I found out that i need occasional carbs - to prevent insomnia and anxiety building up. One small evening carb meal works fine for me.

Guys what are your favorite sources of carbs? So far i tried

rice - for some reason makes me a bit depressed, i never realized how it effects me until trying paleo(been eating lots of rice for 3 years)

fruits - give me sugar high, feeling great for 1-3 hours than crash... i prefer to go without fruits now, though i like them - especially bananas)))

white potatoes - so far my favorite source of carbs, feels better than rice for me.

bread;) I am thinking about trying small piece of brown bread, i've read some people tolerate it better than rice/potatoes...

Would like to hear your experiences about different carb sources and their effect on mood/energy/motivation.

Relax a little about okay? I wrote that thing about your rep because yes, although I do think it is somewhat irrelevant, one with your amount of rep SHOULD know what a carb is, shouldn't they? This is a nutrition board, so if you don't know what a carbohydrate is yet maybe you shouldn't have zero rep, but you shouldn't have 4+K either. I see you view rep points as a way of retaliation, downvoting when you disagree with someone on a subjective answer. I don't care if you downvote me, but don't do it because I commented on your post and you've gotten all worked up over it.

I had no issue with what you wrote, until; “For someone with 4K+ rep points you should know what a carb is by now” which leads me to believe, because someone has a high rep, they should somehow know more than others, or at least to you, they should…rep is such an arbitrary way for someone to decide whether or not the person you’re reading is full of shit or not.

White potato, bread and rice, I can't speak for the OP so I'll speak for me, if you're ok with that? I would add fat to all of those as well as crumbled hamburger making each more than just carbs. In that case would you have also singled out each ingredient or would you have looked at what I had presented and realised that the carb I’m speaking of would have been the white potato, bread or rice?

Well, I was merely pointing out that 1T honey in coffee with 52% cream is like saying "pizza is my favorite carb source", when in reality it would be white flour if that were the case. I didn't downvote you or anything, I was just making the distinction that coffee with 52% cream and 1T honey isn't exactly just carbs, and especially when you throw caffeine in the mix it makes it more confusing at to what it really is that you feel best on. That's all.

Or is it because I mix the cream and carb source together...should I feel bad for that...because if that’s the case I’m sure I melt butter over every tuber I eat also, so am I to get a finger wave from you there as well…please tell me how I should answer everyone in a personal way from now on, it should help with our individual take on what seems to work best for our bodies.

Carbs are bad for Jimmy Moore because he conflates them with an enormous calorie surplus, and unbalanced diet, and a sendentary lifestyle.

Classic. Conflate "carbs" with mixed food sources that derive the majority of their calories from fat (often dairy fat too). Ex. baked potatoes with sour cream and cheese, bagels with cream cheese, pizza, cookies, and other deserts. For someone with 4K+ rep points you should know what a carb is by now.

Though all bread should be avoided, sourdough is considered "more paleo" than your typical brown bread. Some followers of Weston A Price recommend it http://www.westonaprice.org/food-features/our-daily-bread

I eat a good bit of sweet and white potatoes, along with roasted root veggies like carrots, parsnips, and celeriac. They are my main carb source.

I also eat fruits a few times a week (not restricting, ya'll. I just don't really want them more often.) Usually Granny Smith apples, grapefruit and oranges, mangoes and pineapples, and blackberries and raspberries.

I eat hominy grits and white rice a few times a month. (Yah, yah, corn is not Paleo, bite me.)

White potatoes do very well with me, but I don't like more than one potato a day, and I don't like them every day. When I get glutened, white rice is my go-to, because it seems to settle things better than potatoes or bananas.

Lately I've been experimenting with a gluten free flour mix (garbanzo bean, fava bean, and sorghum) for making pancakes for breakfast. I feel great when I eat them, and it lasts me much longer than my usual breakfast of ground beef, potato, and kale or spinach. Normally I'm hungry by 11am, and with the pancakes, I can forget to eat lunch until 1 or 2pm.

I have a similar issue with insomnia and mood issues. I've found that the "potatoes-not-prozac" approach of a small sweet potato with butter an hour or two after dinner is the best thing for me. I can stay in ketosis (I'm trying to lose weight) and still sleep at night.

I feel best on a wide variety of carb sources, and I think that's also the healthiest idea long term in order to diversify toxins and possibly achieve a little hormetic affects in the process (which therefore means I am not a proponent of "safe starch" theory).

For me that variety consists of sweet potatoes, potatoes, beets, bananas, honey, and quinoa for the denser sources. I used to include in that mix oatmeal and sprouted grain bread, and upon elimination I noticed no discernible benefit. So, I am now beginning to incorporate oatmeal back into my routine on occasion. So far so good. I will probably in the near future be incorporating some sprouted grain bread back in on occasion as well. Variety is the spice of life and this is what works for me.

I like berries [straw, rasp, black] for fruit, with an occasional apple or citrus. For starch, bananas, squash, and rutabaga. I'm not big on potatoes or rice, just not a huge fan of either. I'd incorporate sweet potatoes into my diet but I have carotenosis and I'm trying to avoid beta-carotene. I love carrots too, but again, I've had to cut them out till I turn a little less orange lol I also really like vine ripened tomatoes, Backyard Farms brand, friggin' delicious. And a bit of a non-conventional starch, extra dark chocolate bars.

I like canned pumpkin with honey and pumpkin pie spices. Mix in some Greek yogurt or heavy cream and gobble it up! It sits well in the belly and doesn't give any sort of carb spike.
