Preparing PWO Sweet Potatoes

Answered on August 19, 2014

I'd like to eat sweet potatoes + a protein shake post workout. How should I prepare them beforehand so I can eat them quickly after a workout?

Very similar to what I do, but I usually add a nice big tab of pastured butter. Yum!

Why 2 hours? Aren't they done after 1?

:o That sounds awesome. I just made a TON of sweet potato as per ben61820's method. All that starch had me thinking of making some kind of pie... weird coincidence. I'll have to give that a shot, too.

You could add onions, diced peas and carrots and the beef, mix it up, then put it in a small pie plate, top it with butter and egg white, then bake it for 30-40 mins at I dunno...300? PWO "shepherd's sweet potato pie."

Sweet potatoes are PWO crack. I'll definitely give this a shot.

this is foolproof and ridiculously good, i eat it PWO every single time:

scrub and stab them so the steam can escape.

double wrap tightly in foil.

bake for TWO HOURS at 350.

remove and refrigerate once cooled.

Full two hours is the key here. Try it once and you'll never go back.

Here's what I do:

The night before, I cut the sweet potato into small cubes and steam them for 7 minutes. Then, I toss them into the food processor and, assuming about 1 cup of sweet potato, I add 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp allspice or cardamom 1/8 tsp cloves, 1/8 tsp ginger, and a dash of sea salt. Pulse it until it's a puree, and then chill it overnight. Right after your workout, bust this out of the fridge, and you've yourself a PWO snack that tastes just like pumpkin pie filling. Gives me even more incentive to work out because I know what comes afterwards :)

This actually tastes a little better if you bake the sweet potato at 400F for 1 hr, but I prefer to steam it because it's faster.

Add a pound of beef, and you've got 120+g protein and 150+g carbs. You'll be exploding with muscle in no time :D

I microwave a few, then scoop them into a bowl and mash with a bunch of connamon and a little butter, then I put it in a tupperware to bring with me- I go to a CF affiliate 40 mins away, so I'm trying to switch to bringing sweet potatoes & boiled eggs; I was getting a little crazy with the protein shakes!

You can microwave or bake them till soft. Put them in the refrigerator for a few days if you need. Then slit them open when you want to eat! I like them with some blueberries and macadamias.
