Hack My Sudden Weight Gain?

Answered on August 19, 2014

Hi, guys! Thanks in advance for the help.

So I've been eating strict paleo (i.e. no fruit, etc.) since August of last year. I'm 5'1 and around 105 lbs. For a long time I was VLC, up until this January, at which time I began studying abroad in Japan. I've added back small amounts of potatoes and rice to my diet, since I don't eat very much fat.

I tend to undereat, averaging around 1000~1200 calories a day according to Cronometer. I used to be very, very restrictive about what I ate and probably never went over 800 a day- so even with not counting now, I tend towards the lower numbers. According to Cronometer, my percentages are currently 41/36/22 protein/carbs/fat. Carbs are at around 70g, even with potatoes and rice. I also walk around five miles a day during my commute to school. Seems too soon, but could my body be reacting to too long off too-low-carb?

I've been very stressed out since January- living in a new country, commuting to two schools at once, etc etc. I was doing fine up until a few weeks ago, at which time I feel like I've been bloated, get super tired really easily, my body feels softer, and I feel like I've gained fat. Some of my clothes are tighter.

I've been trying to get more sleep lately- probably 7-8 hours a night, 6 at the worst.

Sorry for the essay!! Any ideas?

EDIT: I recently started including more fast carbs- could that lead to water weight gain? And if so, does it go away/how long does it take?

Thanks!

greed. stop eating too much food. Nothing gives me fatty rage more than supposed paleo eaters gaining weight. Paleo does not mean shit tonnes of fruit with cream. Maybe over eating and poor food combinations are not behind the weight gain, but if you honestly evaluate your food habbits and contrast them with lifestyle, you will probably see it is a simple problem. All the best.

Thanks for the reply! I've been eating this way since January though- I wonder what would account for the sudden storage of fat? Is it just the buildup of everything suddenly taking its toll?

Thanks so much for the reply! I really appreciate it. I'll do the above! One quick question about reducing carbs though- I've been trying to get more in, instead of fat, since I have a hard time including more fat in my diet. I've been very low carb since I started paleo, and only recently started introducing carbs back in since I heard that low carb over a long period of time can lead to thyroid problems.

gotcha :) I avoid fruit as well but like to clarify. I just don't like the taste of most fruit but have been trying berries lately.

Sorry about that! To clarify, I meant that in addition to whole foods, I also do not consume fruit.

Sounds like you're in a high stress situation/high cortisol situation with low sleep/food. Kind of a prescription for fat gain. Eat more fats, reduce carbs a bit, get more sleep (try a few nights to get 8 hours in a row and see how you feel). Try going for 200-300 more calories/day and get in the 1300 range. Meditate to reduce stress (high cortisol = easy fat gain and lowered immunity).

Why don't you just eat more and add more fruit? Clearly with mounting stress and EXTREME calorie restriction this has slowed your metabolism to a stand still, it did mine. Eat real foods, don't restrict and your appetite will naturally fall where your full and satisfied. If you find yourself not hungry with so few calories in the day its probably because your body is used to starving and is conserving EVERTHING! So force it a bit or a lot for a little while until it naturally adjusts. And fruit and starch are totally whole foods, just don't over do them. I call b.s. on all the fruit haters.

You are undereating and your body is responding accordingly by conserving energy and storing fat. Add the other stressors in your life right now and it's saying, "just feed me". You can eat strict paleo (whatever that means) and still be underfeeding yourself if you simply aren't eating enough. So maybe try eating more first before you go and diagnose yourself via google
