Fruit VS Safe Starch

Answered on September 12, 2014

After being diagnosed with thyroid problems (poor conversion of T3 and T4) that were immediately solved by going off VLC/LC, I found my carb sweet spot of 75g after introducing safe starches like sweet potatos and white rice. I was considering substituting an apple or a banana as my carb for my meals once in a while. If I want to lose weight/optimize my health, am I better off with high glucose sources of carbs versus high fructose fruits?

There's just as much evidence that iron, magnesium, copper, and zinc are poisonous as there is for fructose, but you'll feel pretty crappy if you eliminate those substances from your diet. Not that fructose is essential, but y'know, context is important. Just because something can have poisonous properties in high doses doesn't preclude it from having benefits in lower doses. Caffeine may also be an example of this.

safe starch. fructose is technically a poison to the body.

Oven-roasted mandioca "fries"(a.k.a cassava/manioc/yuka), pre-soaked in water for 24hours to reduce the possible cyanide content, with some chopped parsley and minced garlic on top. White potato puree, since i'm fine with them; sometimes i quickly boil some sweet potatos, chip them and sautte in pastured lard with some kind of homemade pesto dip aside.

Fellow hypothroid here. Also had problems under 50 carbs per day. I now do about 90, mostly from white potato and white rice, but also do sweet potato, and plantains from time to time. I tend to prefer the starches as they convert directly to pure glucose which is what our bodies needs to normalize T3 function.

But I don't see an issue with occasional banana. I eat them and have no issues. Apples and the sweeter fruits are more fructose which I try to avoid beyond 5-10 grams per day or so.

Good luck with HT.

Hey fatfuck fuck you ignorant bastard. Safe starches are much better for your better becuase they are lower glycemic and low in fructose. Fructose can be a problem if you have gut issues like SIBO and FODMAPS. Besides, a sweet potato alone will keep me full and sated far much longer than ANY peice of fruit. Fruit leads me to bingeing. Fruit only fills liver glycogen. Fruit sucks for bulking and putting on muscle. Glucose carbs like starches is where it's at.

at the levels you're talking about (75g/day), neither option will be a "high" glucose or fructose source. see which feels better.

As you've putted "(...) once in a while." I would not worry much about this. of course there will be no warm what so ever in replacing fruit for starch evry now and then. My main concern thought would be the possible "rush" for sugar, since my n-1 experiences leed me to better satiety with starch than with fructose, hands down.

Fructose in large amount will fuck up your liver and jack up your triglycerides. Bad bad substance. Forget the fruit, especially fruit juices, cane sugar, evaporated cane juice, honey, maple syrup, agave and other fructose sweeteners. Go for glucose carbs like sweet potatoes, cassava, plantains, yams, russet potatoes, squashes and even some basmati rice (low gi for rice). Glucose is much better than fructose. I hate fructose, it's an addictive insulin resisting substance that should be eaten sparingly in ANY healthy diet. With all that being said. A small handful of berries once a month wont kill you.

I would love to eat safe starches but like many I had severe IBS issues and found eliminating starches to be very helpful. So fruits are the primary carb source. I don't like this but those with bowel issues need to improvise and go with a Specific Carbohydrate Diet.

I had a problem with fruit too. It made me stal on losing weight.

So I've been trying to have lots of vegetables with lower carbs, like tomatoes, lettuce, onions, bell pepers and carrots (in order of carbs). I get to have more food this way too. If I had one apple I can have a whole plate of salad with all those things.

I save sweet potatoes or rice for a day with a real good workout.

Safe starches= BULLSHIT.

Fruits= Paleo.

Simple as that. If you have issues with bananas and pineapples use lower GI fruits like peaches, berries and green apples. Simple as that.

Don't buy into the bullshit paleo feed you here about butter, safe starches etc. It's all bullshit.
