counting carbs help

Answered on August 19, 2014

i am trying to up my carb intake from vlc and i'm VERY DYSLEXIC with math. i've never counted anything thing i've ingested in my life other than pills.

is there a good calculator type thing to guestimate carbs? particularly in long grain rice?

the cooked vs uncooked deal confuses me as well.

EDIT: There are blood sugar issues at hand which is why there is a need to keep track of the carb levels.

@jesuisjuba, you made me feel better - thanks! I have a lot of stress in my world today and I probably took it wrong. I'm going to cut WAY back on how many questions I answer.

yeah i do get ticked off sometimes on here because i ask a question.. for example, what's a good mult-mineral for yadda yadda. same kind of non-answer answer "oh yes you don't need a multi-mineral you can get this from foods." it comes off as preachy. sorry. i am sure you meant well.

i don't see why i have to explain every little health detail as to why i do what i do. if people would just stick with the actual questions it would be fine (and less DRAMA)

I respect your opinion but when someone uses all caps and says "jeeze" I feel jumped on. I'm not saying my feeling is justified; I'm saying how I feel.

I don't think she was jumping on you - I think that it was just a misunderstanding which is why I amended her question. New PH'ers learning the ropes, a bit of growth for all :) Just all the facts ma'am and then the voting decisions and such. Now lets all go bounce quarters military style.

Yeah, I do understand but while I don't mind addressing the same questions and concerns over and over and over (and over) I don't appreciate getting jumped on without cause. I think it must be time for me to take a vacation from PH because the investment/rewards feel out of whack right now.

Nance some of us who count and measure, myself included, get major grief for it so it's a sensitive issue. In this case though you were trying to be helpful and holly had left out an important piece of info. Holly if you need to talk about counting anything be very clear that you need to so people don't feel they can open it up for discussion. Trust me on this one.

Just upvoted from the mystery -1. Would be nice if whoever did it actually posted why they felt the need to do so. @Holly I'm editing your question to add that you need to count calories for health reasons :)

agree! i think it's best to leave counting and measuring once you have tried what Nance has suggested, and you are still not getting your results.

I just use Fitday

  • 1 cup Long grain white rice raw is 675 calories with 148 carbs
  • 1 cup Long grain white rice cooked is 205 calories with 45 carbs (assume cooked in water only)

I'm trying to avoid giving side-wise answers, but in this case I think I need to. I don't agree you need to count calories to increase your carbs.

If you've been eating non-starchy vegetables (greens, asparagus, broccoli, etc.) then add a starchy vegetable like potato or rutabaga. If you've been having half of a potato, go to a whole one, or from 1 to 2, etc. If you've been having half a cup of rice go to a cup. Add a banana.

Don't worry about counting. Try a change in how much you eat and see what happens. If that's not enough, add more.

You'll save yourself a lot of grief and you should still be able to find what's right for you.

Get a food scale. And then

Google 1lb white rice cooked calories

Google sweet potato calories

Google 1/4lb 93 7 ground beef calories

works like a charm

I started counting carbs to control diabetes. It works if you're desperate, and once you learn how it becomes semi automatic. But I wouldn't recommend it unless you're desperate.

I like NutritionData ... it's a great nutrition calculator with all sorts of info, much of which is provided visually. Here's their entry for 1 c of cooked long grain white rice. But here's a simple table showing what 15g of carbs is, portion-wise, for various foods.

Me, I'm a math nerd, so the more data the better ;). That said, I think Nance has a point. If you've been VLCing, you will need a little bit of time to adjust to additional carbs, but just adding some starches to your meals is okay too.
