Carbs in Paleo, low energy

Hi ,

I am on Paleo and only started a few days ago so I'm still learning about what foods fit into my diet.

I find without white carbs I am losing weight and have low energy. I used to eat a large amount of white potatoe and rice ecery day. I want to gain weight and I need carbs to do that, my problem is I can't eat too many raw or cooked veg as I have Chron's and white carbs are easy to digest but I've heard that the sugar and starch content contributes to Chron's.

Also I love mash and rice.

Thanks for your ideas

sapponins aren't that big of a deal... chris kresser did a podcast with matt lelonde and he went through some of the "paleo science" and dissected some of these issues... the sapponins for example have only really been shown to be a major problem if you are eating nearly exclusively- potato skins deep fried in vegetable oils (that is what happened in the study)

Potatoes are excepted on a paleo diet & white rice is considered "safe".

Nothing wrong with white potatoes, I had one for breakfast with lots of butter, it was lush and helped with my energy/anxiety a little I think. Paleo is not against white carbs, some even endorse white rice like the perfect health diet

As a suggestion, boil cauliflour, mash it, and depending on how long you boil it, or how much you mash it, it will either feel like mashed potatoes or rice. Now cover in pastured butter, and you will have a great substitute.

Loren Cordains Paleo Diet is strongly against white potatoes due to the saponins. They lead to leaky gut. He recommends other starchy plant organs. There are many and they are tastier than white potatoes: sweet potatoes, yams, beets, celery root, carrots, parsnips, rutabaga, turnips etc. Also, if you have an autoimmune issue, you are better off avoiding nightshades such as potatoes and tomatoes and eggplant. If you need carbs but can't do sweet fruit, stick to white rice, roots and tubers.

The scd diet, theorizes that starches ferment in your colon. Some people have found following scd or maps has helped there crones. Only way to know for sure is to try it for a little while, and then if it works, test individual foods out, one by one.

But most people find they need either fruit or starches, or a little of both. Reason being is your body prefers glucose for some things, especially the brain, and conversion of fat and protein to glucose is slow. Some people do fine on very low carb though, guess its individual.

I guess if you wanted to trial being off starches, you could up your fruit? Whatever u choose its up to you.

Probably, as anything else, how do you feel with white rice and well cooked potatoes? Consume some properly cooked and separately and evaluate. Also check with your endo if thats something you should worry about. My brother as Chrons, and I do know it is an awfull disease and very life restritive. I feels fine on white rice, not so much on potatoes(skinned, boiled) so you have to experiment.
