Carb intake and Ketosis

How long does it take to go into Ketosis and how many carbs does it take to knock someone out of Ketosis?

I'm 17 and weigh around 135lbs and don't seem to be going into Ketosis. I was wondering if it had to do with my carb intake and how long I should go in between cheats.

Ketone levels peak at 10 days of fasting (now I know why Atkins induction is 2 weeks). 50g per day is the line for most people. You can increase your level of ketones using coconut oil. Google "modified atkins diet" or "mct oil ketogenic diet" for details. It's not necessary to be low or very low carb to be ketogenic. According to the Jaminets, the amino acids lysine, leucine and isoleucine are also ketogenic.

Dr. Volek says most folks will fall into ketosis within 72 hours at <50g total carb. They will keto-adapt in 2-6 weeks. 50g+ will toss most people out.

Anything less than 100g carb will put you in ketosis but the more you restrict carbs the deeper you will be in ketosis. I would say aim for 30g carbs per day.

Also you can do some cardio (jogging or bike) to deplete your liver glycogen to put you in keto faster.

Everyone is different it requires experimentation, its based on activity level, body mass and genetics. Somewhere between 50-100 seems to knock me out depending on my activity level.

Thanks everyone! I already bike 30 miles a week or more so I guess it's when I cheat that's screwing me up.
