can you exercise off a binge?

I have a problem with sugar/carb binges that starts with one small cheat, maybe a cookie or ice cream...and results in me eating any sugary carby item i can get my hands on until my stomach hurts. Its almost as if i punish myself for cheating and i know i will wake up the next day and feel awful and depressed. So my solution is always to go the gym and do an hour or so of hard core cardio to try and burn off the extra calories, afriad they will immediatley turn to fat....does this make any sense? im only a few months into the paleo eating and i know that calorie in calorie out does not really work the way ive been told for years but...old habits are hard to break. any suggestions?

fromthericefields, "Make a mental note of why you binged", you sound like book. Exercise causes stress in general!!! So should it be avoided????

If you keep it Paleo/Primal, the binges will disappear, trust me

If it makes you feel better to punish yourself with exercise after a binge, do it.

Keep eating clean, soon you'll see, you don't even think about sweets. It takes time, be patient, you are doing great!

A walk is not bad, can be useful to get your mind off of the binge.

A can of coconut milk with hot water is enough to stop any bad binge, WOW you sure feel bloated afterwards and can't near the thought of eating anything bad as your stomach is so full.

No don't do that, just say to yourself that wasn't the best choice I made. Shake it off and continue being Paleo the best you can. Make a mental note of why you binged, and how to avoid that in the future. Doing fasting and working out to "remove" any bad effects from the binge causes stress. Stress is something to be avoided as it messes with your body.

1 - I'd try going to the gym when you have the craving but before you binge.

2 - Can you burn off the calories? Not really. If you down an entire gallon of ice cream you'd need to run a marathon to burn it off. It just doesn't end up working.

3 - Hitting the gym afterwards might not be the worst idea since it might help your blood sugar.

4 - To me the thing that makes it really a binge is the negative psychology, I honestly think that to at least an extent if you can just say "Crap, that wasn't ideal, I'm going to try and not do that" instead of hating yourself you'll have taken a big step in the right direction.

5 - If you are binging and craving I suspect you aren't eating enough real food. Try "Ok, I'm going to have cookie but not until I have my meat" You eat 50 grams of protein I really doubt how much binging you can do. If nothing else the glucagon will help off-set the insulin a little.

6 - Cardio sucks. There, I said it.

Maybe you should see a mental health professional about your problem with binge eating. Binge eating isn't just some bad random thing that happens to anyone, it's a potentially serious disorder that should be treated with care. When treated properly, you will become much more resilient. I recommend cognitive behavioral therapy.

as a prior binge-exerciser... i would suggest figuring out your trigger for binging (i increased fat and that helped exponentially, also i lowered my carbs (100g a day or less) and stay away from fruit.) by exercising after binging you are kinda introducing a new "obsessive" behavior to compensate for your first obsessive behavior... i would suggest exercising as normal following a binge, but trying to make up for it is going to lead to another obsessive disorder. also what helped me at first was exercising around the time when i was most likely to binge.

i used to be a chronic binger/exerciser. i'd estimate the calories that i ate and then go on the elliptical while watching the calorie counter until everything i ate was exercised off. it's a sick cycle and i addressed it through therapy. my therapist also gave me a book called "making peace with food." it is an amazing book with a lot of writing exercises. it helped me a lot- probably saved my life.

Ya, I go for a walk and I feel a lot better than when I don't. You don't have to do anything crazy. In the mean time work on getting as much nutrients into your diet as you can, and maybe up the animal fats a bit they can lessen the cravings. Also I make sure I keep some broth handy and I'll just heat that up if I get cravings most, okay some of the time that works too.

Practice prevention not temporary fixes. Stop giving into instant gratification. Think twice about the junk that you know is going to harm your body. Good luck :)

When I use to fall on a binge I would fast for 16-24 hours the next day and I would exercise harder and longer than usually. I don't recommend you doing this on a regular basis, but it sure takes away the guilt, somewhat.
