Under-rated? Lol. They're the most overrated group of foods on the planet. Base of the food pyramid? Heart-Healthy-Whole-Grains? 10 servings of fruits a day? Come on, if anything fat is the most underrated (demonized?) macronutrient. Carbs get a pass from just about every health agency (USDA, WHO, etc.) despite their consumption being one of the primary causes of the millions of cases of diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
