Alcohol for energy

This is more just a conversation piece and musing. We all know the three macronutrients and the energy they provide us with. They do other things, but we mostly eat energy all day. Paleos usually prefer fat.

Calories per gram:

  • carbohydrates = 4
  • protein = 4
  • fat = 9 (awesome)
  • alcohol = 7?

So we can get more energy from pure alcohol than carbs or protein, almost as much as fat. We're just like cars! Of course, the alcohol powered cars thing never took off. But what about alcohol powered humans...

So what's my question?

I dunno, maybe if you had an extremely high alcohol tolerance you could metabolize the stuff and run a marathon... It'd probably destroy your vital organs. I don't have a question.

I think alcohol is probably fine. Keeping the dose to 1/2 the amount it takes for you to feel it probably eases the load on your organs. And if you dont abuse it it probably wont take any time off your lifespan unless you're old or infirim.

I certainly wouldn't recommend alcohol to anyone pregnant. But I'd put money on the theory(my own) that a glass of diluted(a la Ancient Greeks) wine wouldn't harm the fetus. That being said I would still recommend no alcohol for anyone pregnant/nursing.
