Really need help with these mysterious symptoms!

I've battling what i presume is a hard case of Candida. I'm 21 years old, and have been on a paleo diet for 1 year. I noticed about 8 months ago, that i would get nausea suddenly, and it would last for days, following the nausea i would get horribly depressed and just lethargic, confused, and completly un-energetic. Then i would feel good for 3 or 4 days, then time to feel horrible for a week or more again. I really care about what i eat, and could find a connection to food. I then went Very low carb ( Below 30 ) and immediatly i got oral thrush. I've been low carb for 3 months, and i haven't seen much improvement. The times in between symptoms have maybe gotten a little bit better, but it is all the same. Then three weeks ago i tried adding in some starches ( Sweet potato and potato ) I felt great! and continued to do so for a good while, until now. I've just had a 5 days nausea spree ( feels like foods just fermenting, leaving gas i my stomach ) and now im depressed and back to hating life and everything in it. My Oral thrush have not lighted up either. What should i do ? why am i experiencing these symptoms in " waves " ( Not triggered by foods, or events ).. Is the diet, without anti fungals just not enough? Also - I have dark circles under my eyes, and im red around my nose and under my eyes. Also, sometimes my skin is very dry.. I'm seriously at the end of my line here. Life is just miserably. And i truely feel alone with this, since my docter is at NO help what so ever. Thanks in advance. Alexander

I wish I had an answer, all I know is that a very low carb diet seemed to exacerbate my Candida problems over time as well. Have you looked into SIBO? Apparently, monosaccharides won't feed the bacteria but more complex sugars will. Also consider parasites, there's some sinister protozoa that cause nausea, and all parasites work in cycles, hence the symptomatic inconsistency.

Thanks for you answer :) I have tried Gaps, although only for 3 weeks - But it seemed to do nothing for me. I don't think i have any allergies. And i've basically swapped out my entire diet several times, to try and find that one thing that might make everything better.. No luck though ;/

Did you try oil pulling for battling the oral candida? and with coconut oil? Seems to work wonders in killing the yeast. IMO first thing would be trying to address this issue as it is a pretty evident one.

But dry skin and dark eye circles plus all the weird feelings... to me sounds that could also be either hypothyroid symptoms or dehydration. You could first try checking if you're having enough sodium and magnesium intake (beware as LC/Paleo seems to put a higher demand on these due to getting rid of most carbs and processed food), also try drinking always mineral water. A sea salt tablespoon with mineral water (watch out possible tap fluoridated water) when you feel weird could serve as a quick test to see if it solves something to you, it would be a good clue to electrolyte imbalance and/or dehydration. The SIBO would also be nice to be checked but if you felt OK after some days having had sweet potato (that contains mannitol which seems pretty offensive when SIBO) seems not like it unless it was delayed. A full thyroid and hormone panel could reveal something.

Also, would be nice to know how exactly you've been eating, when being low carb we understand it was moderate protein, high fat. If not, it could end in calorie restriction diet that could not provide enough glycogen via gluconeogenesis/ketones and bring up glucose deficiency, more even if you was not still very fat adapted (think low carb flu).

More possible things. Being young as you are it could be worth checking for the epstein barr virus (mononucleosis) as it can make you feel like crap in the lines of what you've described.

If none of these, then... do you energy levels fluctuate a lot during the course of the day? do you feel bad in a general fashion or do you feel your worst during the morning? If it's the later case, then also an adrenal test (cortisol/DHEA) would be awesome to look for some more possible causes. Connected to the adrenal thing, are you also under any stressing life situations? These could exacerbate anxiety/bloating/nausea feelings specially when you have some other underlying issues like IBS, bad digestion, infections, adrenal fatigue... or a combination of many of these. Well, it could really be a ton of things.

You could also have a look at Th1/Th2 immune imbalances as it might be some weird unsuspected things like coffee, tea, cocoa, grapes, wine that could be messing with your immune system and attacking the gut which is a host for many other problems.

Well, just giving some random thoughts, hope you can find some answers!

alexander,

i am so sorry to hear you are having these symptoms. while i don't have 'the answer' sometimes it's just good to know you have company, yes?

i have some mysterious/unsolved health issues as well, despite following very strict scd/paleo.

i know many people in my circle of friends who have had miracles happen following gaps or scd.

i wonder if you have an allergy/sensitivity to something that you eat alot of, eggs, chicken, something that is paleo and due to damage in your stomach is just not working for your body right now.

looking forward to seeing what others have to say, hopefully more answers!

wishing you good health,
