Paleo for someone with suspected Candida and problems with fat?

Hi everyone,

I'm suffering from dysbiosis and leaky gut, and my naturopath suspects a Candida overgrowth, so starch and sugar are big problems for me. At the same time, my pancreas and/or liver aren't functioning properly, and although the doctors have been unable thus far to diagnose me with any known condition, I have horrible digestion and there seems to be some kind of biliary obstruction going on, because I have big problems with fat.

I was just wondering if anyone who has similar difficulties with fat has experienced any improvement on the Paleo diet or something similar, like GAPS? It seems like all the macronutrients are against me here. I have such awful reactions to sugar and carbs that I barely eat any, but I do try soaked and sprouted lentils or navy beans once a day in hopes that it might stop me from losing so much weight and because I can't seem to process fat. I've wanted to try a strict broth fast but I really don't have much muscle mass to lose.

I'm aware that this question is probably too serious and medical, I'm just trying anything I can here.

I can back the Jaminet recommendation against going too low-carb. I too experienced increased problems with candida on a VLC diet.

I liked the Renew Life and felt that it really helped detox me ( and it was 50% off at Whole Foods in January so all the better there). Many years ago, I used Yeast Defense ($8-10/bottle) once every 6 mos and it also worked for me. This time I went with a much more expensive regimen because I have so many serious issues, perhaps since I'm a female in my late 40's and/or several years of bad eating and high stress lifestyle has taken it's toll on my body. Anyway, I felt so much better that I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again next month.

Interesting, I tried the Yeast Buster Cleanse but I don't think my system could handle the fibre. I might try a different anti-fungal cleanse... what did you think of the Renew Life one?

*his diet :) The thing is, I probably am starving. I do suffer from all those symptoms. When I first experienced Candida symptoms, however, I was vegan and living off of tons of calories, most of which were carbs. I've tried to eat more grain and starch but it just hasn't made me feel better at all. I tried to eat a few berries a couple months ago and it made me feel like I was poisoned; I was hyperstimulated for a couple minutes, then suddenly felt drunk and dizzy, my lymph glands swelled up, my nose started running, and I felt so horribly fatigued I couldn't do anything all day.

-1 because there really is no concrete evidence that Candida/other years can live on anything BUT sugar. If harness is having trouble with starch, adding starch to her diet will ONLY cause more problems. You don't put out a fire by throwing more gasoline at it.

Hi Joanna, thanks for the reply. Sorry that it's been hard for you too... I've never done an MRCP, but I've gotten an ultrasound and a CT scan that revealed no structural abnormalities. My bloodwork, however, revealed abnormal liver enzymes, bilirubin, and lipase, so something's not functioning right. I really wish I could handle dairy but I think there's too much fat or I'm sensitive to the lactose. I suspect I have some kind of problem with bile because (TMI, forgive me) my stools are pale, sometimes greasy, and smell horrid. Fat just makes me feel awful in general.

Be careful with going too low carb. Candida (if you truly have it, and just FYI: there are no reliable tests for it) can thrive on ketones as well as sugar.

Paul Jaminet had candida and highly advises against going low-carb.

Also: symptoms of candida are very, very similar to those of adrenal fatigue. Symptoms of adrenal fatigue are also very similar to those of starvation. Just a thought.

Self-diagnosing is a very bad idea. I did it for a long time when I suspected I had candida, and spent a lot of money on visiting naturopaths and buying supplements.

Eat liver and oysters 1 - 2x a week, but eat some starch as well as fat/protein/veggies.

I had my gall bladder removed years ago, after a couple of weeks of painful stones. I discovered when I started paleo that I have trouble digesting fats. (I am sure I had trouble all along, but it was disguised by other elements of my diet.) Your body still produces bile (which is needed to break up fat), but it can't store it up for extra fatty meals. So when I eat a lot fat now, I now take capsule with a mix of ox bile and bitter herbs, and I frequently add bitter herbs to salads or in cooking. Arugula, parsley, cilantro, chamomile, peppermint and many others all stimulate bile production.

Really interesting stuff. I too suffer with a bit of Candidia. Although i've eliminated most of it through diet, I can tell that I haven't rid of it completely. I've attempted and am still in the process of doing lowish carb right now. I do 100-150gs a day (That's working out around 5 days a week includeing HIT)

For awhile my liver enzyme numbers were very high, but they're slowly coming back down. I've been trying to make fat my highest macro-nutirent and it's taken my body a bit of time to get used to it. It IS adapting though. I also suffered from a bit of Adrenal Fatigue, but that was because I cut so many things out and was malnourished. For awhile I had very little fat in my diet and was just eating a lot of starches. Not good. I still tend to avoid a lot of sugar, but I notice when I go very LC that I can see the candida on my skin. Still debating if I wanna try ketosis.

I used to have many of your problems with candida and fat digestion in addition to severe allergies. Paleo has helped with the allergies but the candida problem was stubborn. I had to do an internal general cleanse/ detox ( Renew Life FirstCleanse) then a candida cleanse ( Renew Life Candida Gone) before feeling better. I did that at the beginning of the year and am thinking about doing it every six months.

have you had an MRCP done? that is a test where the doctors can see your bile ducts as well as other organs in your abdomen. i had one done because my doctor thought i had PSC due to consistent high liver enzymes, but i didn't. the test itself just requires lots of inhales/exhales in a machine.

i also have candida problems and meat/kefir/yogurt/cheese take up the most calories in my diet. i am really trying to cut my carbs down right now though it's been hard for me.
