For any other men out there, have you had experience with a yeast infection? Has anyone had success or trouble while going Paleo? What would you recommend?
It's been a while since I've been here and since I ate 100 percent paleo. I was doing Raw Paleo for over 3 months last year.
A big problem for me has always been not getting enough carbohydrates in the diet. I need a decent amount of carbohydrates. I have done a few months of VLC and ZC and it never turned out well. I have done my share of fasting and trying to get into ketosis and it never worked for me.
I let go of dieting in the last half year and have really been indulging in carbohydrates, life became "sweeter".
I used to suspect that I had candida for a long time, having almost all the symptoms, yet all I did against "candida", nothing ever helped. It wasn't until recently that I moved to Europe, started drinking alcohol, having sex and eating more carbs that I actually ever noticed what seems to be a yeast infection.
So what's clear is that I should definitely drink less/no alcohol, cut out as many carbs as possible, etc..
I've been eating much more paleo recently and go with it as much as I can now.
Is there any advice on this from someone with experience?
I am definitely going to see a doctor, I feel that they are a little different here than in the U.S.

Have you tried adding homemade milk kefir to your diet?
Saccharomyces boulardii also seems to work for some people. It's a very underrated probiotic.

Last year I got my first yeast infection. Ha, didn't know guys got them. It was after a course of antibiotics for a bug bite I got. I was at the beach when it started so I'm not sure if swimming in the ocean had anything to do with it. It was itchy and painful but I was able to get it under control with this cream (ah can't remember the name) but it's a generic cream for vaginal yeast infections. I also used oregano oil which is anti-fungal and stung like hell. It took maybe a week to 10 days to get rid of. I haven't had an infection since.
So you if you haven't used antibiotics recently, my guess is it was transferred from a partner, and the alcohol is probably not helping. I would see a doctor. And nobody should have to live without carbs, especially if you're active

I would definitely suspect candida problems, especially if you have ever been exposed to antibiotics or steroids. I've had problems with candida most of my life until I started eating paleo. Jock itch every now and then, constant acne, heavy white coating on my tongue (which eventually turned orange..gross huh?), and thrush from my tonsils. Let me say that though these are small problems you can deal with, candida WILL turn into a major problem. Some doctors suggest candida worsens absorbency problems in intestinal lining and can eventually leak into your blood. So now, instead of having your candida to get rid of, youre facing possible IBS, and we know how crummy IBS is. Don't quote me on this, but some doctors also suggest candida problems can lead to cancer in some cases.
Paleo helped me conquer candida. Candida grows on sugar and carbs and yeast. If you eliminate these three, and also take steps to eat oxygen rich foods and replace you good gut flora, you can kill your candida problems. But it will take time. But it doesnt stop there; once youve ridded of candida, you have to replenish your good gut bacteria, to keep candida at a minimum.
For me, it meant an entire lifestyle change. No alcohol (bummer). No sugar (sugar addict). No yeast (love bread). Lots of greens (hated greens). You cant mess around with candida either. You have to almost starve it out. You can eat 1 month paleo, and one day go out and have 8 beers with friends, and your candida will be back to square one. It is a very very difficult thing to get rid of, but, it isnt impossible! I wldnt say I've gotten completely rid of mine yet (ive been strictly paleo 35ish days now) but I have definitely seen most of the side effects go away.
Also, there are prescription anti-fungals too, (ex: Diflucan) but as stupid as mainstream doctors are today, I hear its kinda hard to get a hold of. They would rather throw antibiotics at the problem and see you again in 30 days. If you are able to get such prescriptions, I would go paleo while on the meds to help kill the candida faster, and maybe take a massive amount of fiber and water to help flush the dead candida (I hear candida can actually feed off it's dead, so excreting the dead thrush candida is important too).
Hope this helps

yeah... but when my yeast "left me" I felt like my dog rubbing his hiney on my floor, ass all that yeast took up resident on the outside of my nether regions (you do the visualizations)... it was bad too! it lasted for 4-5 days and then finally went away (I used some athletes feet cream to make sure it wasn't fungal)... I'm not sure if this is what your experiencing or not but alcohol, European women and their rich diet could lead you to making some mistakes :D I was just kidding with the "gonorrhea statement"!
I don't know about yeast infection on the skin or anything else like that... but if it is in your penis I'm seriously guessing STD or NSU (non-specific urethritis) and for that you need to seek medical treatment.

i've been trying to completely clear myself of candida since august 2011. i tried the kefir thing but, like my comment said, it didn't work. but here's the 3 things that started to work like charm:
1) Zero-carb - i know u said that vlc and lc never worked for u, but that's the point, ppl on vlc/lc don't necessary achieve ketosis because their carb intake is to high and close to switching the body to carb-burning. and candida eats any carb as first choice. (actually when carbs r there they eat it and produces alcohol and when carbs aren't there they eat alcohol. so don't drink if u don't want it to slowly zap the quality of ur life.) zero-carb takes a while (8 weeks for me) to fully adjust, just try again and have ur caloric intake at 80% fat. i've been eating just meat/fat for over 3 months now as the first step to clear candida. ur poop will be quite funky because the body adjusts the probiotics in ur intestines and will poop out alot of dead stuff and then also dead candida and making everything strange.
2) virgin cold press coconut oil - the best anti-fungal to take with meals. i tried other stuff, not as powerful as this. the smell might make u feel like vomitting after taking it a few times. but just keep eating it. start with 5g (teaspoon) mixed in with meals first (if u want to start slow) and stay next to a toilet :)
3) colonics - 2L water mixed with 1 tablespoon of organic/unfiltered/unpasteurized apple cider vingear. don't buy the wrong ACV, has to be with the "mother in it". bragg's brand is the only one i know of. that ACV mixed with water and injected into entire length of the colon kills candida on contact and u will see them coming out if u do have them. remember research a little about how to do colonics at home (in a tub) and stop the water once u feel pressure at the right side of ur pubic area cuz that's where the colon ends and u don't want water/anything flowing back in to the small intestine. ACV can also used externally to prevent yeast infection. i use it as a finish after pooping.
NOTE: the all-mighty Die-off symptoms -
as the candida in u die, u will feel like crap! they release all sorts of toxins when not happy (read: not feed) and so u can imagine what happens to have them as dead bodies in ur body. i suggest u read up about that as well - depression, fatigue, cravings, weight loss, and any problems that u had before will pop up as well and, if sticking to 1/2/3 stated above right, the symptoms might even change every week. but just have faith and work through it. it might take weeks or months.

I used to have occasional candida flare-ups and my husband used to have a problem with external yeast. That eased up a lot when we started taking Candida Clear (NAYY) a year or two ago.
About a month ago, my husband was tired of getting an occasional yeasty-ness in his private parts. He borrowed my bottle of hydrogen peroxide with a sprayer from the cleaning supplies (great green cleaner, BTW!), and sprayed his private parts during his shower. He stopped after three or four days because it went away. It also stayed away.
We started full Paleo a couple weeks ago, and he still doesn't have any problems there.
