Pancreatitis+ cancer in a dog -- nutrition/ supplement advice?

Hi everybody,

My 10 yr. old dachshund has been on a grain+offal (buckwheat, crushed wheat porridge+ cow lungs) diet his whole life. He's been pretty healthy except for puking episodes every now and then, which it turns out were something of a chronic pancreatitis.

These past few days he's been sick with a fever, also some puke, and apparently his stomach "stopped" for a while (not enough digestive enzymes from the pancreas). Parents took him to the vet, she suspects that his pancreatitis is in an acute phase. The ultrasound also discovered a 16cm internal organs tumor which is most likely cancerous and definitely not operable. For now his treatment/care consists of dimedrol, analgin, vitamins and glucose shots, small amts of water every hour, some chicken broth. We are also waiting for test results to exclude any infectious diseases.

So here are my questions.

1) What nutrition/supplements would be optimal for his pancreatitis? From the little research that I've done I realize that grains have to go-- but he can't be given lots of fat (as well as raw meat) as he throws up after eating them because of the sick pancreas. What should I feed him?

2) What nutrition/supplements would you recommend for his cancer? Do you think it's possible to at least stop it from progressing? As I understand, vit D, fish oils are essential. What would the recommended doses be? (he weighs about 11 kgs~24 lbs)

3) Any other advice you can give. Preferred treatment?

Don't mean to turn this into a pet forum, but paleohacks just seems a place to go for nutrition advice. :) Thanks so much!

P.S. I'm also about 8000 km away from the dog, so I can't directly observe/treat him. Will have to pass on the advice to my parents.

It's alright, I'm (really) blaming myself too. I suspect dogs get grains in their diet for the same reason as almost all other domesticated animals do. Grains are cheap, and there has been far too much bad science to support the "grains are good for you" meme.

He was never fed kibble, just cooked grains and cooked offal.. which apparently wasn't any better. Thanks for the pointer! Will research Prey Model right now.

I really don't get what grains do in a dogs diet. But hell, even fish get them. Not (really) blaming you, I just don't get it.

Grain diet is horrible for a dog. They are carnivors. Leaky gut there I'd say.

With that said, try joining K9Nutrition Yahoo! group. Lew is a Rottie breeder, nutritionist and AKC Judge who believes and advocates raw feeding. He book just came out.

I'm sure she will recommend a diet change but is well versed in herbal supplements and such as well. So even with your current diet, she can help and won't diss you for the grains. Really your best bet for info.

I'm sorry to say, despite your parents hopeful belief that they were feeding a healthy diet, but that diet is HORRIFIC!!!! It is no wonder that his body is shutting down. :(

You need to get that dog on a Prey Model Raw diet ASAP. Like Sandra mentioned, feeding raw is the way to go. There are a lot of great resources online for raw feeders. And, since MOST COME TO RAW due to health issues, it is very likely you'll meet someone online who has gone through exactly what you are currently experiencing. You'll be amazed at the help you can receive online. If you search "forum" and "raw feeding", you'll find a number of forums.

Raw feeding for 8 years and will never go back to kibble, evah!
