Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Pancreatic Cancer, and Paleo

Have you seen the movie "50/50", starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt?

I saw it a couple weeks ago, and it's pretty good. Afterwards, I googled the type of cancer the character has, and found a few articles about a girl with cancer that asked Mr. Gordon-Levitt out for coffee in the form of a youtube video.

It turns out she has a blog about her cancer, which is well-written. Also, she just went vegan. So I sent her an email complimenting her writing style, and asked her how her vegan diet was going, saying that I was interested because I'm a nutrition PhD student.

But that's not the only reason I'm interested. Rather, like most of you, I wonder if she might be better off with a different way of eating. Like maybe...paleo? :) You never wanna spring the "paleo" word too soon, you know?

So she emailed me back today, and asked me what specifically my thoughts were about diet and cancer. I can browse paleohacks for links, consult the writings of Paul Jaminet, etc. But what are the 3-4 best things I can say, and is there a best and most understandable link I can send her? She has pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. If you know anything specifically about this fairly rare cancer, that would be even better. I'm looking to say something more convincing than just "cancer eats sugar!!! vegan is bad!!!".

Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have said "She is cute". That shouldn't really have anything to do with things.

Rich, that is sad :( I wish there were more studies of paleo/low-carb and cancer. The only peer-reviewed study I ever read explicitly stated that funding is difficult to get for such trials.

Well at least she is into Crazy Sexy Cancer, which promotes a gluten-free soy-free diet. I also think it's not always true that every cancer eats sugar.

Hi Paleo Designer. The post is not a joke. I told her that I'm a PhD student in nutrition that saw her youtube video and had thoughts on diet and cancer. All of that is true, unless we're in the Matrix :)

I gave you a downvote. I don't have the energy to elaborate further. But I will if need be.

I like this question Kamal. This is something I think about also. A good friend of mine just emailed me today and told me his younger cousin just passed away from complications from brain cancer. He was diagnosed 7 years ago. "Treatments were going well and cancer seemed to be in remission, but last week he started getting headaches and nausea." He was brought into the ER over the weekend and went into a coma on Sunday. He passed away today. I wonder how his health would be now if he would have changed his diet 7 years ago to a paleo style diet.

She is super cute - and so is he! I am not gonna weigh in with diet advice but I'm curious as to whether he went for coffee with her. I hope he does.

Yes, lying to her and criticizing her diet sounds like a great way to get her to go out with you...

Seriously, I hope this post is a joke :(
