Should I avoid drinking calories?

I am reading the updated version of Dr. Harris's Archevore diet (link), and the top recommendation is:

  1. Eliminate sugar (including fruit juices and sports drinks) and all caloric drinks, including milk. Drink water, tea or coffee.

He seems to not be against diary per se, rather, the point suggest that it is not good if I drink the calories (instead of eating them). Is that correct? If so, it is because the blood sugar will be elevated more quickly, and that's not optimal?

I don't care about votes. Red wine is consumed for thousands years. Liver can detoxify 1 typical glass of alcohol per hour (depending on your sex and previous exposure). I don't drink much because it gives me huge appetite. But even Linus Pauling stated in "How to live longer ..." that drinking alcohol is better then drinking tea.

Yes to alcohol! Whoo-hoo! So, is that 1-2 8oz glasses of whiskey, then? Sign me up!

+1 to offset the negativity. Seriously? If you are going to downvote, then be considerate enough to say why. Yeah, okay, it's not the most lucid and compelling answer - but was there anything really wrong with it?

It's not clear to me whether the prohibition is just against liquids with sugar (juice, Gatorade, milk) or includes whey protein shakes. There certainly are arguments against protein shakes (not real food, insulinogenic), but it can be useful for some depending on your goals - such as for post workout. But yes, srinking calories is never going to be as satiating as eating real food.

I agree. For anyone but pretty sporty athletey active folks, drinking calories is simply unnecessary.

Yes, you should not drink calories. It's a waste. You get way too many calories for way too little satisfaction. Yes, they elevate your blood sugar quickly, but also, the whole concept is to eat REAL FOOD.

The other factor is the effect on digestion. Liquid food is basically pre-digested and so doesn't activate your digestions like regular food.

The only point I can see to a "smoothie" is if either you are sick in a way that you cannot digest food or you are severely underweight and need to consume more calories than you can possibly eat.

It depends if your trying to lose or gain weight. Liquid calories are a lifesaver if your an athlete or are trying to bulk.

Instead of the smoothies you'll be much more satisfied to layer the fruit up with nuts coconut, coco milk, Greek yogurt and berries and eat it. I started doing this instead of blending a while ago because I was always hungry afterwards.....makes sense that it doesn't take much to digest and passes through your system quicker if blended.

Eat your foods unless you can't due to illness or need for weight gain.

skip the juices. one serving alone uses up half your intake of carbs for the day.
