How many calories?

Answered on August 19, 2014

Can someone please give me a straight forward answer as to how many calories are there in Chicken breast? Im a huge fan of it, and eat up to 3 even 4 chicken breasts a day. Not as much as i used to due to not being as hungry now that i have acclimated to the paleo way. To be specific. How many calories per 100grams? So many conflicting figures on google you dont know what to believe.

Hey girlie! Life has been super hectic lately. First a two week visit from my sister/nieces, now we have started cheerleading practice (I'm a coach) which is 5 days a week for 2 hours on top of my full time work schedule. Not much time left for hacking. On the plus side, I have an awesome tan and have been outside a lot. :)

I haven't been to TJ's in years, but I agree with you, Shari. I recently found out that my chocolate has been lying to me. My chocolate! I feel so betrayed! I'm now boycotting brands that fudge (hah) their numbers until they reply to my emails explaining the discrepancy. :P

Brand nutrition labels are notoriously bad. I don't trust them especially Trader Joe's which are so far off they are laughable.

Depends on how big the chicken breast is... you need to weigh them and then calculate the calories based on the ounces.

if the goal is fat loss, for some, calorie counting is essential- sad but true.

Then shouldnt you be asking about how many grams of protein is in a chicken breast? I dont see the correlation between calories and protein bioavailablilty and utilization.

You really don't need to do calories at all if you are eating paleo.

Absolutely Aaron. I agree. I just dont want to over do it because i know that there is only so much protein the body can utilise.

Just asking, but why do calories matter to you? Just eat real food (especially meat and fat) until you are sated.

The chicken breasts I buy are 120 kcal for 112g raw, which would become about 107 kcal per 100 grams raw. However, the cooked measurements vary due to the weight changing once you cooked them. For instance, if you stewed the chicken, it would retain moisture and be heavier, therefore fewer kcal per 100 grams versus if you roasted it, drying it out a bit, thus making it weigh less for the same amount of calories.

If you really care about the calories (I admit, I count too), check the weight of the chicken before you cook it. For instance, if you buy a 1.5lb package of chicken breasts and there are three breasts in there, it's generally safe to assign approximately 240 calories per breast.

On a side note, have you tried chicken thighs yet? They're like chicken breast's younger, sexier sister, I swear. To me, the breasts are typically dry and bland, but the thighs are complete flavor/moisture awesomeness, and only ~10 calories more per 4 oz (130 kcal versus 120kcal). Plus, they're cheaper, which is a win in my budget-conscious book. :D

Every chicken breast isn't the same. You're only going to be able to get averages. It's the bane of calorie tracking, and the more "whole" the food is, the more this is going to be a problem

Wolfram Alpha says: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=100+grams+of+Chicken+Breast

I've found Wolfram Alpha to be great for breaking down food that I cook. No sign-up, just type it in and it gives you the nutritional data.

open your free account at www.fitday.com and track the calories for all your foods there. Yes, protein calories do count, as do protein grams. Unless you are into very heavy weight training, you probably don't need more than 1g of protein per pound of LBM, if you are trying to gain muscle mass, then perhaps up to 1.5g. No need to overstress your kidneys.
