Question about clarified butter aka ghee

How much is okay to eat a day/week? I made some from a 1 lb of kerrygold butter a few days ago and have eaten almost the entire thing. It freaking tastes amazing and gives me the energy that was missing. I've been cooking with it plus eating it out of the jar.

I'm a 31 yr old male, 10% body fat, no family history of cholesterol or heart issues

I had a similar thing happen. Do you buy the "detox" explanation that cholesterol may increase because once you start "eating healthier" by consuming lots of ghee you are lowering inflammation and the cholesterol increases to repair damaged tissue? Not sure I buy it, but Chris Kresser made a comment suggesting this is plausible, and I believe the bulletproof guy explicitly says this.

Mine dropped 20-something% after 5 weeks of no butter, but I haven't tested again since then. I'd be really surprised if it were much more than 200.

Did you got your cholesterol back down to that level? I have been eating whole coconuts now (and using oil, but not much, good stuff is very expencive here), and no butter, lets see how it will be in 5months when i retest. I eat alot of marrow too (its free).

Mainly I try not to exceed my own body weight in butter/ghee consumption. Otherwise it spikes my butterfat-to-blood ratio beyond my preferred range of 1-1.25.

I believe in a good mixture. In my kitchen you will find coconut oil, olive oil and ghee. Before starting the paleo diet some seven weeks ago I only used olive oil for cooking, frying ... and my total cholesterol was 255, HDL 82 and LDL 147.

Eating tons of pasture butter spiked my total cholesterol from under 200 to 391. At that level, I don't think it's possible to turn over the LDLs fast enough before they become oxidized. Seems like it could be a risky thing to do for years given what we know about oxidized lipoproteins and their role in the etiology of CHD.

For me it's not the amount of fat that's limiting my ghee consumption - my skin/hair gets greasy and my body odor intensifys if I eat to much ghee and butter.

So I limit it and use other fats as well: coconut oil, red palm oil, beef tallow...

If you feel good with the ghee and butter - go on. Your stomach will tell you if it was too much in one meal.

Isn't Ghee supposed to LOWER Cholesterol in the body? Or is it just lower compared to traditional butter?

Travis did you get your cholesterol back down? I spiked mine to 460, not sure how. I stopped all dairy, except some old good cheeses like parmegiano-reggiano that i use for cooking. Now i eat mostly mufa fat. Bone marrow, duck fat, avocado oil, some coconut oil, and olive oil. Wild game in finland is quite high in mufa. So this is what has been eaten before.
