Butter makes me gag - Help!!!

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created May 18, 2011 at 6:44 PM

So I was inspired by Seth Robert's butter experiment and yesterday's post on butter and increased energy. I tried it this morning and gagged. I seriously heaved it out of my mouth (pissed it landed on the floor). This is probably a mental block but it was so utterly gross to me. I tried it one more time and still - gagged. I think it was the texture.

Help me figure out how to eat butter! Should I try to melt it and nose pinch it down?

(I never thought I'd ask this question a year ago!)

Edit: If it makes a difference - I can't swallow pills either. I chew my supplements...and they aren't the chewable kind.

Nope. It's just that the Kerry Gold (I buy it in a store, too!) tastes a whole lot better. I don't think I could eat the grain-fed stuff straight...maybe I could, but not with pleasure.

You seem to look upon store-bought butter as taboo Thomas. Would you give a brother a reason? I am consuming minimum 100 grams per day.

oh yeah, you can make some hot black tea in the future and chase it with that. the tannins in the tea will cut right through that fat and it should help it go down very nicely.

Mine has to be room temp so it's like butter pudding and it just melts in your mouth. I prefer salted when eating it straight.

but gagging can be both mental and physical. For example, in the third grade a fruit roll up made me gag (physical) but also, the thought of press on nails also makes me gag (mental). I do agree that in either case, maybe you shouldn't combine disgust and eating.

What kind of butter are you eating? The grass-fed stuff (Kerry Gold, etc) is like crack. The non-grass-fed stuff is like crack too, but a different sort of crack.

This may not be the answer you're looking for, but I think you should not eat something that makes you gag. It's an involuntary reflex action -- Your body is telling you something.

I would say melt it with a very dark chocolate or, if you do stevia (we do) we melt the butter/and/or/coconut oil, mix with equal parts unsweetened cocoa and add stevia to taste..then freeze...it is like chocolate ganache...also, I make my own hot chocolate using hot water, tablespoon of the cocoa, stevia to taste, a bit of heavy creme and then blop some butter (the kerrygold) into it..if you can ignore the fat blobules floating on top (which honestly, almost turn me on) it tastes lovely and you won't believe it IS butter!

Melt it and drink it, maybe mix it with some warm water and/or lemon juice. Or tea, there is a Tibetan drink known as "butter tea" which is basically strong tea mixed with fresh yak butter.

I have a lot of trouble taking fermented cod liver oil that is in the "gel" form, for maybe the same reason you gagged on the butter. It's too solid to drink, too soft to chew, and if you smoosh it up in your mouth enough to swallow it, you're REALLY going to taste it, which might be a bit too much.

My cat and I love butter straight up. I think its delicious, kinda like ice cream. But my wife thinks I'm crazy and it makes her gag if she sees me eating it.

I don't see any point in you trying to eat it straight if it grosses you out or makes you gag. How about adding it to something else like spinach or a sweet potato?

Edit: Here's a link to Seth Robert's on how to eat a lot of butter...
