Almond Butter vs Peanut Butter

Answered on September 12, 2014

Is almond butter a better paleo alternative to let's say, JIF peanut butter? I like eating a little peanut butter with a banana or apple.. But I know it's not the best option. I'm just wondering if almond butter is better? And better with the paleo lifestyle. Should it be unsweetened?

I have mixed coconut oil into it for a less dry texture! It also tastes pretty good.

Lia - Also, one thing to think about if you have some time one weekend, is to try and make your own almond butter as a fun little project :) Check out this link for step by step instructions: http://www.amazingpaleo.com/2012/07/13/how-to-make-homemade-almond-butter/

Almond butter is healthier. Peanuts are legumes, a post-agricultural food (not paleo), and contain more harmful lectins among other things (see link below). Peanuts have an acidic effect on the body, whereas almonds are alkalising. That said, favour a natural, unprocessed peanut butter over commercial almond butter full of hydrogenated oils and sugar.

If you have a Trader Joe's, they have an awesome Almond Butter...all natural, tastes so good (I prefer chunky). Only ingredient...almonds

And yes, almond butter is better...peanuts are not Paleo, almonds are...boom

I don't eat a ton of nut butter, but when I do I usually do homemade Peanut butter, Sunflower butter, or Macadamia Butter. Almond butter is just not good. Peanuts get a bad rap because they are legumes (not sure botanical definitions are that important) and have high phytic acid. Phytic acid is not all bad, and almonds are higher than peanuts

I would be concerned with the total ingredient list first before worrying about the type of nut, so check the ingredients. Jif has added sugar and other garbage.

I love peanut butter and don't care much for almond butter. I go for organic, unsweetened options or even better, get the freshly ground.

have you read the ingredients for jif peanut butter? there is like 20 different things in it. i don't even know how they can call it peanut butter. definitely go with the almond butter since it's not a legume.

Lia,

Type in Peanut Butter into the search key at the top right of the page. You will get several results of questions pertaining to this issue that have already been posed.

But yea, in short, almond butter is a better Paleo alternative. I would for sure stay away from JIF. And if you have to have peanut butter, you should choose an organic option with no added sugar or other additives.

It doesn't taste the same, but is a good alternative and far healthier. Almond butter tastes kind of dry to me. I like it better as an ingredient in things as opposed to eating it plain.
