Is Raw Cacao Butter supposed to taste so earthy/like dirt?

I bought Terrasoul brand raw cacao butter, intending to use it for making chocolate and to try it in my bulletproof coffee with cacao powder. Today I used about a tablespoon of it and two teaspoons of cacao powder in my coffee...it was disgustingly earthy tasting. I had to leave for work so a healthy dose of cinnamon covered the taste up just enough so that I could drink it.

I read that other cacao butter is "deodorized to remove its strong and undesirable taste." But everyone else seems to love this raw, natural version, even on it's own! Did I get a bad batch or is this just my life?

UPDATE: I bought some legit cacao butter without the earthy taste (even if it was sold by raw foodists ;) ). Warning: do NOT purchase Terrasoul raw cacao butter, it's disgusting!

@TheGastronomer I bought another brand that does not taste like dirt, if you still want the old one I'll send it your way. It's weird that this site doesn't have direct messages. email me at LauraTaylor97@gmail.com

it's actually not the cacao POWDER thats' the problem, it's the cacao BUTTER. But if you do stevia (nunaturals or vitacost alcohol free liquids are the best), adding some will balance out the bitter taste

It definitely is an acquired taste. I love it, my daughter loves it, my son hates it and my husband hates it. I think if you enjoy dark chocolate then you like it. Try this: put it in a smoothie with a banana, your favorite milk, a pitted date or two and a pinch of cinnamon. You'll get your chocolate fix.

Good luck, make little batches so you don't have to throw away the whole thing if it goes wrong. Also, you should use it to saute mushrooms or root veggies like beets, earthiness might be a desirable quality in some circumstances.

haha, I'll try that, and I'll try making some chocolates with it (using a much higher ratio of chocolate to cacao butter) before I give up.

Damn that sucks. Have you tried clarifying it like clarified butter? This might burn-out the impurities and the solid particulate that gives the raw cacao butter it's undesirable flavor. Just cook it until the solids burn to the bottom and filter out the melted cacao butter. If this fails, I'll be happy to take it off your hands....

I've been using the cacao powder forever, just tastes like dark chocolate. I did try a sliver of cacao butter on it's own and it tasted like dirt...I thought it would be better once I added the cacao powder but it definately didn't help much.

This is a funny thread.

I just got this cocao powder recently and it definitely has a bitter, dirt vibe to it. But I've just been powering through it in smoothies with almond and coconut milk telling myself this is for health and not taste. Nutrition is why is bought this.

you just made me dig out my raw organic cacao butter from the bottom of the fridge.

i have this stuff.

here's the verdict on my stuff, it does Not smell or taste like dirt,

it has quite a sweet smell to it. it is a light yellow/creamy colour, with sort of a dusting of white.

Why are you blaming the cacao butter and not the cacao powder? Cacao powder tastes exactly like dirt, which is why I like it (don't judge me). Have you tried eating the butter by itself without the powder?
